The text of today:
------------
2 Timothy 1: 6, “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”
Interesting points:
1. In this verse, Paul encourages Timothy to develop the gift of God which some interpret as (a) spiritual gift(s), whereas other Scriptures use this phrasing to mean “salvation”.
2. In John 4:10, Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well about the "gift of God", referring to salvation. In Romans 6:23, Paul tells us "For the wages of sin is death but the (free) gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" and he writes in Ephesians 2:8, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God". Consequently, Timothy's "gift of God" most likely refers to salvation.
3. Fanning a flame makes it stronger, brighter, and hotter so Paul is encouraging Timothy to be careful not to let his empowering salvation grow cold and die by neglecting God’s calling on his life. Timothy’s sincere faith that lives in him (Verse 5) propels him forward: as he moves boldly forward to fulfill God’s calling, his salvation is apparent in those he encounters and, like a smoldering fire fanned back into flame, it spreads to the unignited to light it on fire.
4. From this perspective, Paul’s laying on of hands refers to Timothy's commissioning/ordination to preach and teach the Word, fanning the flame of salvation in others so that they do not become/stay spiritually passive despite God’s salvation.
Application.
Brothers, in the previous verse we identified that we all have an important role to play in the spiritual development and growth of younger generations through discipleship, spiritual mentorship, counseling and teaching solid doctrine all contribute to building up newer believers. In doing so, we help fan the flame of God’s wonderful gift of salvation.
But we must stay on our guard for if we ourselves are spiritually passive, have died to the joy of our salvation, and/or have hidden our light under a basket, we invite condemnation on ourselves for hypocrisy and our terrible example. It is better that we turn to God to renew a right spirit within ourselves before opening our mouths or raising our hands to help teach others!
That being said, if we have the sincere faith of Timothy, let us heed Paul’s encouragement and fan the flames of our salvation by seeking God’s help to answer His purpose for our lives!
