Good to see you here again! May God bless you in this Bible Study.
Here is the text:
2 Timothy 1:16, “May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.”
Interesting points:
1. Contrasted against Phygelus and Hermogenes, in this verse Paul places a blessing on the household of Onesiphorus, a gentile man, who opted to stand firmly by him in his hour of need while he was imprisoned.
2. Although this is the only book of the Bible that mentions him, we can deduct from 2 Timothy 4:19 and from Verse 17 that Onesiphorus worked with Timothy in Ephesus, alongside Priscilla and Aquila. His ministry was one of encouragement, provided Paul much-needed comfort and support, such as food and drink. More importantly for Paul, Onesiphorus was not ashamed to associate with a despised criminal (indicated by his chains) like Paul, frequently visiting him in jail.
3. Notice how the blessing that God would show mercy extends to Onesiphous’ entire household. This indicates that Onesiphorus did not act unilaterally and the family had to make some tough sacrifices to fund the journey to Rome and provide Paul with comfort and support. God’s mercy most likely manifest itself on Judgement Day, thereby granting them eternal life.
Application.
Brothers, this verse provides good food for thought concerning our intervention to assist and support the most vulnerable among us and those even far away. It also underlines the need to get our families on board to provide such support effectively. By setting priorities together, the family commits and works towards a common goal
May God provide us wisdom and discernment as families in providing others the support they need lovingly and effectively. May He also give us a heart to see and value the person who oftentimes feels stripped of their dignity, isolated and full of despair. Like Onesiphorus, may we be such a blessing to others in their hour of need that all they can do is praise God and pray that we will always strive to be the blessing He intends when He blesses us.
