In this verse Paul is mentioning Timothy's mother and grandmother. I find that interesting!
Here is the text of the complete Bible Study of today:
----------------------------------
2 Timothy 1: 5, “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”
Interesting points:
1. In this verse, Paul continues encouraging Timothy, this time by reminding him that he comes from and belongs to a strong family of faith, both physical and spiritual.
2. Paul reminds Timothy of the strong faith of his physical family. Although Acts 16 reveals that Timothy's father was a Greek — a Gentile, this verse tells us his Jewish mother, and her mother (Lois) demonstrated sincere faith. Both Lois and Eunice were devout believers, raising Timothy to know the Torah and Jewish customs. Undoubtedly both Lois and Eunice had become Christians in Lystra during Paul's ministry there, so their influence on Timothy's spiritual development/growing up in the faith would have been enormous.
3. This verse parallels Verse 3 where Paul noted that his own faith was a continuation of that of his Jewish ancestors. In this verse, Timothy's faith is nurtured by his own Jewish ancestors. Paul and Timothy were therefore “family”; both as fellow Jews, and as fellow believers in Christ. Although Timothy ministered in Ephesus, far from his home city of Lystra, his spiritual family continued to influence his walk with God even as he influenced them by preaching/teaching the Word.
Application.
Brothers, this verse reinforces that we all have an important role to play in the spiritual development and growth of younger generations, both for our own flesh and blood and within the larger spiritual family. Discipleship, spiritual mentorship, counseling and teaching solid doctrine all contribute to building up newer believers, no matter what their age is.
When we think about how God used others to grow and build us up in the faith, we not only realize that we have a somber responsibility to do likewise for others less mature in the faith, but we also begin to lean into God to live righteously (set the example) and sharpen our ability to communicate His Word so that it impacts, convicts, transforms and influences their lives.
Let’s take some time today to ask God to show us some way(s) that we can start stepping out in faith to build and strengthen the next generation to fight the upcoming spiritual battles they will most certainly face.
