2 Timothy 2:17-18, “Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some.”
Interesting points:
1. In these verses, Paul warns Timothy against providing distracting arguments undue attention by comparing it to introducing gangrene, a disease, into the body of Christ. Left untreated, gangrene begins to infect and spread other parts of the body. In a similar way, false teachings spread throughout the body of believers and cause much harm.
2. Paul specifically mentions "Hymenaeus and Philetus" as false teachers. We first heard of Hymenaeus in 1 Timothy 1:20 when Paul said, "among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme." This verse is the only by-name mention of Philetus in the New Testament and he probably partnered with Hymenaeus in his false teachings, which included the claim "that the resurrection has already taken place."
3. Paul addressed a similar problem in 1 Thessalonian 4:15, teaching, "According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep" -- the resurrection has not yet taken place yet but when it does, the dead in Christ will rise first, followed by all living believers (1 Thessalonians 4:17).
4. This false teaching about the resurrection was causing a crisis of faith for some of the less mature Christians in Ephesus. Although not every Christian in Ephesus was fooled by this false teaching, it had become a large enough problem for Paul to address in both 1 and 2 Timothy. Even in His last days he stood firmly against false teachings and instructed Timothy to do the same.
Application.
Brothers, these verses reinforce the importance of our studying God’s Word so that we will not be led astray ourselves and can better protect those who have still to mature in their faith.
In correctly handling the word of truth and avoiding godless chatter, we will find our minds are focused keenly on hearing what God has to say. Those that fail to apply the Word in their lives or are so busy with gossip, fruitless arguments and/or relying on their own understanding can easily be distracted from achieving the Lord’s purpose for their lives.
May we continue to study the Word and be vigilant against seeds of untruth planted by false teachings which will spread as quickly as weeds in a lawn. Armed with the Word, may we ready ourselves to uproot heresy, clear up misunderstandings, and address those who require correcting.
