2 Timothy 2:19, "Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: 'The Lord knows those who are His,' and, 'Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.’”
Interesting points:
1. In this verse, Paul turns to the Old Testament in reinforcing to Timothy the importance of holding onto sound teaching, especially in the face of false teachings. God’s Word is true to who He is and those that follow Him can remain steadfast with this knowledge.
2. The "solid foundation" Paul references is the Old Testament scriptures with Numbers 16:5 recounting that "The Lord knows those who are his." Paul affirms that God knows who truly believes in Christ and although false teachers may be persuade some people that they speak God’s truth, the Lord is not misled.
3. The second reference, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness” does not quote a specific passage but speaks of the Israelites who had to re-dedicate themselves to God and turn away from sin repeatedly in their history. Those that failed to turn away from their sinful ways and follow God reaped the consequences for their rebellious ways.
Application.
Brothers, God is steadfast and consistent both in His being and the fact that sin/evil have no place by His side. Either we turn from sin and turn to God OR we cling to it and are cast away from His holiness. As God’s Word align with who He is, it serves as a solid foundation for our faith and to fully understanding His character.
As Proverbs 3:12 tells us the Lord disciplines those He loves, we can rejoice when we are corrected. This is the right attitude to take when we turn from our sin and seek after God, especially since those that choose to cling to their unrighteousness will reap the catastrophic results for their rebellion, whether it is in this life, for eternity or in both!
Besides turning from unrighteousness ourselves, way we be a beacon pointing the way to others to God’s truth which is encapsulated through His Word just as Paul exhorted Timothy!
