Welcome brothers, it's me again. Great that you are joining the Bible studies at the begin of this new week!
Here you can find the text I'm reading:
2 Timothy 2:23, "Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels."
Interesting points:
1. In the two previous verses, Paul instructed Timothy on what to "flee" and what to "pursue." Here he repeats his warning of Verse 16 and 17 to avoid the shallow, pointless bickering which spreads like spiritual gangrene.
2. Fruitless arguments simply lead to more arguments, setting believers against each other for no good reason. In 1 Timothy 2:8, Paul calls upon the leading men of the church to pray without quarreling and in 1 Timothy 3:3 he taught that elders must not be quarrelsome. Lastly, James 4:1–2 also identifies such quarreling as springing from our own internal sinful desires.
Application.
Brothers, if we operate on the premise that silence is consensus, we are driven to respond with guns blazing every time a fool opens his mouth to spout his ignorant opinion. But we are called to be knowledgeable, wise, and discerning: let the ignorant proclaim their foolishness by the loud words of their mouths. The truth will eventually reveal where they draw their “wisdom”.
In these days of conspiracy theories, political pundits and demagogues, anger is stoked and passions enflamed; but the Christian who holds on to God’s truth -- as communicated through His Word -- will enjoy a peace that passes all understanding even as arguments rage all around them. At the appropriate time, when others are worn down fighting indiscriminately in the storm and darkness, God speaks through those that wait for His promptings and the World not only listens, it recognizes and pays attention to His wisdom.
May we listen to our Lord speaking to us on whether we should intervene and what we should share. May we avoid the pointless arguments that serve as distractions to our fulfilling God’s purpose for us in the now.
