2 Timothy 2:24, "And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful."
Interesting points:
1. Building on the previous verse which talks about avoiding arguments which readily lead to quarrels, Paul explains that "… the Lord's servant must not quarrel". Instead, he/she chooses to effectively consider others instead of building up one’s ego with “lofty opinions”.
2. The word translated "servant" literally means a bondservant or slave, indicating one’s total subservience to God, forgoing self to instead act with His attributes of kindness, love and patience in order to accomplish His objectives. Being His servant implies that we do His bidding and just like a slave/servant who is given a task, we must not argue or quarrel with others while conducting our Master’s business.
3. Paul’s instruction to be "kind to everyone" aligns nicely with what Jesus said in Luke 6:35 about our Heavenly Father (who is kind to the ungrateful and wicked) and expects the same from His followers. In being kind to everyone, we not only represent our Master correctly, we also foster a relationship with them by demonstrating that we can listen without taking offense.
4. As we already studied in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, overseers in the church must also be "able to teach" and -- according to 2 Timothy 2:10 and 12 -- "patiently enduring". This implies knowledge, discernment and wisdom gained from both studying God’s Word and understanding the motivations and hearts of those around us – even those who are most inclined to argue and quarrel. By not quarreling with others we are better able to listen to them, understand them, hold their arguments up to the Lord’s holy Scriptures, seek His insights and -- should He call us to speak the Truth in a convincing peaceful manner – win the unbeliever over.
Application.
Brothers, it is easy to see how an intimate relationship with God motivates us to act with His love as described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Out of it springs the type of kindness discussed and patience inferred in today’s verse.
And it is only by studying and applying His Word in our lives that we can come to know Him intimately such that we know His voice. Such study also helps us verify whether the words we believe we ought to share with someone are God’s for they will fully corroborate with Scripture. God simply does not contradict Himself.
May we be trustworthy servants with the right temperament, self-control and wisdom to fulfill our Father’s purpose for our lives!
