2 Timothy 3:15, "[But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,] and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus."
Interesting points:
1. In this verse Paul continues to encourage Timothy to remain steadfast in his faith, noting his lifelong immersion in God’s Word which enabled him to recognize that Jesus was the fulfillment of the Scriptures (today’s Old Testament) and strengthen his walk with God.
2. Although Timothy’s father was Greek, in 2 Timothy 1:5 we saw the key role his Jewish mother and grandmother provided in teaching him the Torah from an early age. Timothy also developed wisdom in navigating the pitfalls of Jewish traditions and rituals that some tried to impose on the early church as Christianity spread. Acts 16 tells us Paul circumcised Timothy as an adult before Timothy joined him in ministry because of the Jews in the area who knew of his Greek heritage but later, Paul refused to circumcise Titus to counter the legalistic impositions of a rising Judaizing faction within the church which sought to impose Jewish customs on Gentile believers.
3. Paul underlined that the written word of God -- both the Old Testament and the New -- lead people to a saving knowledge of God through Jesus Christ. The Old Testament writings spoke of the upcoming salvation, but salvation itself came through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9): Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets.
Application.
Brothers, it is a good thing to read and to study Scripture, yet another to obey it! We are meant to be doers of the Word and not mere hearers!
And like Timothy, it is by applying the Word to each and every situation -- with all the nuances that each circumstance brings – that we develop wisdom so that we can apply God’s Word appropriately in life.
Not many of us were raised by our parents to study the Word daily, and how many of us train up our own children in studying the Word this way? But like this Bible Study, may we learn to whet our appetite for our daily bread and learn from each other how to better obey and apply what God reveals to us for spiritual development and living righteously!
