2 Timothy 3:6-7, "They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth."
Interesting points:
1. Transitioning from Verses 2 to 5 where Paul described the traits of the Wicked in the last days who claimed to know God yet lived sinfully, in these verses Paul describes a smaller subset of false teachers who would lead others astray.
2. This smaller subset involved con-men, thieves and those who seduced vulnerable women, targeting and taking advantage of them in their own homes by deceiving them with false teachings and leading them into further sin. As we studied in 1 Timothy 5:2, real teachers of God's Word were to treat "older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity". This is likely the reason we find a warning in 2 John 1:10–11 concerning false teachers which says, "If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works."
3. There were three concerns Paul raised with these women. First, they were "loaded down with sins", meaning they engaged in other sinful actions in addition to being led astray by these false teachers. Second, these women were "swayed by all evil desires." These referred to both sexual sins and other areas of weakness in their spiritual walk. Third, Paul says these women were meaning they were forever seeking the newest, most novel spiritual fads, never recognize and adhering to the truth.
Application.
Brothers, we must always be on our guard against those that would prey on the vulnerable in Church – the elderly, the widows, orphans and the innocent. Part of maintaining good order and discipline in the Church is effective training in the Word, then there are good governing policies, accountability and removing the wolves-in-sheep’s clothing from the flock.
May we be very careful in our own walk to guard ourselves from such sin, avoid all perception of evil, and correct immediately any false teachings that undermine sound Scriptural instruction and righteous living in the body of Christ.
