Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many. I have taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness. When you walk, your step will not be hampered, and if you run, you will not stumble. Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life. — Proverbs 4:10-13

I have had many days where I have had similar thoughts as Solomon does here. Moments I have thought, "I wish my kids would just do what I tell them to do." And the reason I have this thought is that I don't want them to make the same mistakes I did. Or rather, I don't want them to make the same mistakes the way I did.

Isn't it true, parents, that some of us have learned wisdom the hard way? And there are some of you that this is the only way you learned. We all learn some wisdom through tragic mistakes. And we share this with our kids hoping they won't learn their way to wisdom the same way. So we implore them as Solomon does here — "Son, accept my words!"

But there is also another reason we share wisdom with them. We want the best for our kids. We want, as Solomon says here, for "the years of their life to be many." So for goodness sake, son, do what I tell you to do. The way I tell you. Because you don't have to learn from your stupid mistakes. You can learn from my stupid mistakes. Let the lessons I learned in stupidity pave the way to your wisdom.

ASK THIS: What stupid mistake do you not want your kids to make that you made?

DO THIS: Tell your children about it and share the wisdom you gained.

PRAY THIS: God, watch over my children. Give them wisdom.

PLAY THIS: Unspoken — Mistakes.
