PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

Ephesians 6
The Armor of God
Part 3
“The Importance of Prayer”
Why is prayer important?
When Paul gives us this exhortation to prayer it is in the context of speaking about spiritual
warfare.
Matt 26:40-41 2 Thess 3:1-3
Vs. 18-20
1. Prayer should be in the Spirit
Paul mentions the role of the Holy Spirit in our prayers.
Rom 8:26-27
 The Holy Spirit can lead us or tell us what to pray.
 The Holy Spirit can speak to us through the word and show us in principle what we
should be praying for.
 The Holy Spirit can also bring certain conviction to our hearts in regards to prayer.
Oswald Sanders
“The very fact that God lays a burden of prayer on our hearts and keeps us praying is
prima facie evidence that he proposes to grant the answer, when asked if he really
believed that two men of whose salvation he had prayed for over fifty hears would be
converted, George Muller of Bristol replied, “Do you think God would have kept me
praying all these years if he did not intend to save them? Both men were converted, one
shortly before, the other after Muller’s death.”
2. Prayer should be of different kinds and request
In the Lord’s Prayer recorded in Matthew 6 we see the different kinds of prayers that can be
offered.
"`Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your name, Worship
your kingdom come, Allegiance
Your will be done Submission
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread. Petition and Intercession
Forgive us our debts, Confession
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, Deliverance
but deliver us from the evil one.'
For Thine is the kingdom, Worship
and the power
And the glory, forever. Amen
3. Prayer should be continuous
Why would Paul exhort us to do this?
Because the work takes place in the heavenly and we cannot see it.
Acts 1:14 1 Thess 5:16-18
4. Prayer should be persistent
Luke 18:1-8
Jesus also said on the Sermon on the Mount, we should ask, seek and knock. Matt 7:7-8
5. Prayer for those who need boldness
a. Paul asked for Prayer
He had done the miraculous, stood before Kings and Emperors.
But despite that he ask for prayer.
Peter and John after being threatened by the Sanhedrin gathered to pray.
Acts 4:29-30
b. Paul as an Ambassador
“An ambassador in chains”
Listen to what Paul says about his chains in his letter to the Philippians.
Phil 1:12-14
We are only here for a time Paul says, “Our citizenship is in heaven”.
This should be our perspective.
Develop a prayer list.
Include you family, those you are witnessing to, the ministries of the church, the
missionaries that have gone out from the church.
Use the church bulletin as a list.
Use the church directory as a list.
Vs. 21-24
6. Prayer needs to be heartfelt for our missionaries.
“That you also may know how I am and what I am doing.”
“That you may know how we are”
