New Testament - Luke 19: 1-10 "The Salvation of Zacchaeus"
The Salvation of Zacchaeus
Luke 19: 1-10
1. The CHILDLIKE CHARACTERISTICS that led to salvation
Vs. 1-4
1) The POSITION of Zacchaeus in the community.
Vs. 2
Kent Hughes,
He was the kingpin of the Jericho tax cartel and had the scruples of a modern-day crack dealer. He was filthy rich in the fullest sense of the term. Not a likely candidate for the kingdom!
2) The PURPOSE that he had.
Vs. 3
What motivated Zacchaeus at this point in his life?
It is also very likely that Zacchaeus had found his wealth and lifestyle unsatisfying.
It is very probable that Zacchaeus was weary of being hated by his people.
Luke 5: 29
Were there other tax collectors praying for him?
Luke 3: 12-13
Jeremiah 23:19, James 4:8
3) The PROBLEM Zacchaeus encounters in seeing Jesus.
Vs. 3b
In the East, it is unusual for a man to run, especially a wealthy government official.
Luke 18: 17
2. The CALLING that led to salvation
Vs. 5
1) There was a PURPOSE in Jesus inviting himself.
Zacchaeus thought he was seeking Jesus (Luke 19: 3), but Jesus was seeking him! (Luke 19: 10)
By nature, the lost sinner does not seek the Savior (Rom. 3: 11).
2) Jesus made the invitation PERSONAL.
Vs. 5b
HE CALLED HIM BY NAME
In Jesus’ use of his personal name there was a hint of grace.
Psalm 139: 16
Revelation 3: 20.
This meeting was ordained before the foundation of the world (cf. Ephesians 1: 4–6).
HE COMMUNICATED HIS LOVE
Vs. 5b today I must stay at your house
The camel was about to go through the eye of a needle!
3. The CONTRAST could not be greater between Zacchaeus and the crowd.
Vs. 6-7
Notice the reaction of Zacchaeus.
He is filled with JOY.
And the crowd.
Vs. 7 But when they saw it, they all complained
4. The CHANGED life that comes from salvation.
Vs. 8
1) Repentance is central to this STORY.
Having trusted the Savior, he then gave evidence of his faith by promising to make restitution to those he had wronged.
2) Repentance is central to SALVATION.
Matthew 3:2, Matthew 4: 17, Acts 2: 38
5. The CRITICAL issue of faith for salvation.
Vs. 9-10
1) SALVATION is by faith alone.
“Today salvation has come to this house,
Zacchaeus trusted Jesus Christ and became a true “son of Abraham,” meaning, of course, a child of faith (Rom. 4: 12; Gal. 3: 7).
2) SEEKING and SAVING were the purpose in His coming.
Vs. 10
No one in Jericho saw this coming.
The guy that ran the tax cartel who was thought of as a traitor with the morals of a crack dealer was now saved.
