PASTOR TIM's NOTES:
Matthew 14:22-36
“Lessons from the Storm”
1. Jesus sent them into the storm.
Vs. 22-24
Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side.
As we read our Bibles, we discover that there are two kinds of storms:
storms of correction, when God disciplines us; and
storms of perfection, when God helps us to grow.
2. Jesus prayed for them in the midst of the storm.
Vs. 23,24
2a. Jesus prayed alone.
Mark 1:35-36, Ps 55:17, Luke 5:15-16
2b. Jesus prayed for them.
He sees us and knows our needs.
Mark 6:47-48, Rom 8:34-35, Heb 7:25
3. Jesus comes to them in the midst of the storm.
Vs. 25-27
3a. Jesus came to them on the water.
Do you think that Peter and the boys felt abandoned at this point?
Nobody was saying, “No problem Jesus will just walk on water and come and help us out
in no time.”
2 Cor 1:8-9
Why did Jesus walk on the water?
Warren Weirsbe,
To show His disciples that the very thing they feared (the
sea) was only a staircase for Him to come to them.
3b. Jesus came to them and they did not recognize him.
Why did they not recognize Jesus?
It is because they were not looking for Him.
3c. Jesus came to them with encouragement.
They now take courage because of his presence
Ps 27:14
John 16:33
4. Jesus allows Peter to personally test his faith in the midst of the storm.
Vs. 28-33
4a. Peter responded by faith.
4b. Peter responded in submission
James 4:7-8
4c. Peter responded to the circumstances around him.
Jesus saved him despite his doubts.
Will we sometimes have our doubts in the midst of the storms of life?
Yes!
John 6:39-40
Jesus caught him and then taught him.
In the storm we need to keep focused on the Lord.
1 Peter 3:12
4d. Peter’s response became a blessing to the others.
Or Peter’s failure became a blessing to others.
Jesus is worshipped by those in the boat.
They say, Truly you are the Son of God.
Mark 6:51-52
What hardened hearts?
Unbelief
5. Jesus came through the storm to meet the needs of many.
Vs. 34-35
They brought their sick to Jesus.
Did these people know that He had come through a storm to meet their needs?
Do we remember that He endured the storm of judgment to save our souls? (Ps. 42:7)
