PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

Matthew 28:1-8
“The Empty Tomb”
1. It is the Women who are the first to RETURN to the tomb.
Vs. 1
1a. The women who RETURN are identified as eyewitnesses.
1b. The women RETURN after the Sabbath’s.
After the Sabbath- means long after the Sabbath
So the text tells us it is at dawn.
We should also note that it is after the Sabbath’s as in plural.
Passover- Unleavened Bread and now it is the Feast of Unleavened Bread
2. It is an Angel who REVEALS the empty tomb.
Vs. 2-4
2a. The Angel who REVEALS the empty tomb came down from heaven.
 There is a violent or great earthquake.
 He rolls the stone back and sits on it.
2b. The Angel who REVEALS the empty tomb has a startling appearance.
His appearance was like lighting.
That means his face is like lighting.
His cloths were white as snow.
Dan 10:5-6
3. It is the ROMAN guards who are terrified.
This term great or violent earthquake is used only a few times in the New
Testament.
It is used by Ezekiel speaking about the Magog Invasion.
Ezek 38:19-20
The same type of earthquake will occur during the Tribulation.
Rev 6:12
It was used of the earthquake when Paul and Silas were in the Philippian
jail. Acts 16:25-26
4. It is the Angel who announces that Jesus has RISEN.
Vs. 5-7
4a. The angel encourages the women to not be afraid.
Why should they not be afraid?
The angel says they should not be afraid because Jesus rose from the
dead.
Why should we not be afraid?
We should not be afraid because Jesus rose from the dead.
John 14:1, Phil 3:20-21
What was Mary’s response?
John 20:13
4b. The angel informs the women that Jesus is not in the tomb he has rise.
Notice that the angel points to the evidence of the empty tomb.
Come and see the place where he lay
Don’t take my word for it- come and see the evidence.
4c. The angel promises that they will see Jesus again.
5. It is the Disciples who are still waiting to RECEIVE the news.
Vs. 8
Mark 16:2-7
5a. After RECEIVING the news Peter and John run to the tomb in unbelief.
John 20:3-5, Luke 24:11-12
5b. After seeing the tomb Peter and John had different reactions.
John tells us what happened in his gospel. John 20:5-8
What did John see that made him believe?
The grave cloths around Jesus would have been wrapped like we would see on a
mummy.
It would have looked like a cocoon.
Peter went away still wondering what had happened.
The facts were not enough for Peter.
Paul speaks of this problem in his letter to the church in Corinth.
2 Cor 4:3-5, Ps 16:8-11
