PASTOR TIM's NOTES:
Revelation 11:1-19
“The Two Witnesses”
1. There will be a TEMPLE rebuilt in the future.
Vs. 1-2
1a. John is given instruction to measure the TEMPLE.
The word for "temple" refers to the holy place where only the priests could
go. Dan 9:27, Matt 24:15-17, Daniel 12:11 , 2 Thess 2:4
1b. John is given instruction to leave the outer court to the Gentiles.
Why? It is because the Gentiles take Jerusalem.
2. There will be TWO prophets with a unique ministry.
Vs. 3-6
2a. The TWO prophets will have a ministry for 1,260 days.
According to Revelation 11:3, they will prophesy for 1260 days, or forty-two months, or
three and a half years.
There is a reference to Zechariah 4, the clue we need to determine the identity and
purpose of the two witnesses.
2c. The TWO prophets are anonymous.
A strong case can be made for Moses and Elijah. Malachi 4:5-6, Luke 1:17,
Matthew 11:14
2d. The TWO prophets will have supernatural protection
and powers. James 5:17-18, Exodus 7:20
3. There will be a TURNING point in the expectations of the Jewish people.
Vs. 7-10
3a. There will be a TURNING point when the anti-christ kills the two witnesses.
This is the first of thirty-six references in Revelation to "the beast."
Revelation 17:8
3b. The TURNING point will include having their bodies lay
in the streets of Jerusalem for 3 ½ days.
The city depicted here is the earthly Jerusalem, the place "where also our
Lord was crucified."
3c. The TURNING point will include a celebration over their
death.
4. There will be a powerful witness of God’s power at the midpoint of the TRIBULATION.
Vs. 11-14
4a. The powerful witness will be seen in the resurrection and
rapture of the two prophets.
In the midst of the world's celebration of their deaths, God miraculously
intervenes (the "breath of life from God entered them").
4b. The powerful witness will be seen in a great earthquake.
1) The results upon earth are interesting indeed-a great earthquake kills
seven thousand men.
2) Those that remain are fearful and give glory to God.
The earthquake dramatizes this event as truly an action of God.
It is also interesting to see that a great earthquake occurs at the sixth seal
judgment, the sixth trumpet judgment, and the last plague judgment.
5. There will be rejoicing in heaven at the announcement of the TRIUMPH of God’s kingdom.
Vs. 15-19
5a. The TRIUMPH will be heard when the 7th angel prepares
to sound his trumpet.
5b. The TRIUMPH will be heard when the 24 elders initiate
worship in heaven.
1. God's power is being proclaimed
2. God's plan is being accomplished
3. God's promise is being fulfilled
4. God’s punishment is being declared
5c. The TRIUMPH will be seen when the temple in heaven
in opened.
The ark is a visual reminder of God's sovereignty and faithfulness.
