Romans 1:1-7
“Paul’s Introduction”
The THEME of Romans is, the just shall live by faith, we see that in the opening introduction.
The summary of the book can be found in verse 16 and 17 of the opening chapter.
The PURPOSE of the book is mutual encouragement.
We find this in verse 11
Chapter 1 to 8
Principles of the righteousness of God by faith
Chapter 9 to 11
Problems of the righteousness of God
Chapter 12 to 15
Practices of the righteousness of God
1. Paul’s PERSONAL introduction
Vs. 1
1a. His PERSONAL introduction included being a bondservant.
His introduction of himself as a “servant” (doulos) is very significant.
Jesus uses the same word when he describes the position of a servant
Matt 10:24
Paul makes reference to all of us being the servants of God.
1 Cor 6:19-20
This is the same word that Paul uses to describe Jesus Christ.
Phil 2:5-8
The servant nature of Jesus was taught and modeled by Jesus.
1b. His PERSONAL introduction included being an apostle.
“one who is sent by authority with a commission.”
1c. His PERSONAL introduction included being set apart.
separated to the gospel of God
Paul was not self-appointed!
God called him!
2. Paul’s PREACHING was based on the Prophets and the Person of Christ.
Vs. 2-4
2a. Paul’s PREACHING was based on the Prophets
Paul saw his preaching as being an extension of the ancient Old Testament
message.
2b. Paul’s PREACHING was based on the Person of Christ.
According to verses 3 and 4 his task was to preach that Christ was both human
and divine.
Paul’s preaching was dominated by Christ as the Son of God.3
3. It was Paul’s PRIVILEDGE to share a message of grace.
Vs. 5
3a. It was Paul’s PRIVILEDGE to know God’s grace.
Grace is always an amazing thing to Paul, as we see later in Romans: “where sin
increased, grace increased all the more” (5:20).
3b. It was Paul’s PRIVILEDGE to take the gospel to the nations.
Missionary is the Latin form of “apostle—one who is sent.”
4. Paul’s PERSPECTIVE of the believers in Rome.
Vs. 6-7
4a. Paul’s PERSPECTIVE of the believers included 4 things.
1) They were called by Jesus Christ
2) They were beloved of God
3) They were saints
4) They were called by grace to peace
