PASTOR TIM's NOTES:
“There Is A Believing Remnant”
Romans 11:1-10
1. The EXAMPLES of the Remnant.
Vs. 1-4
1a. Paul is the Personal EXAMPLE.
The fact that his conversion is presented three times in the Book of Acts is
significant (Acts 9, 22, 26).
Paul called himself “one born out of due time” (1 Cor. 15:8).
1 Tim 1:16
1b. Elijah is the historical EXAMPLE.
In his day, Elijah thought that the nation had totally departed from God.
Poor old Elijah thought he was all alone, but there were 7,000 others!
2. The ELECTION or choosing of the Remnant.
Vs. 5-6
2a.This remnant has been ELECTED or chosen by grace.
the election of grace
The word for election in the Greek ἐκλογή (eklogē)
It simply means; to choose.
God chooses based on grace.
Rom 10:14-15
We need to be that person or at least send that person.
2b.Since ELECTION is by grace then it can no longer be by works.
Vs. 6
The logic of this verse is referred to as “inductive reasoning”. It is a principle of
Aristotle but is clearly taught here in the Bible.
It goes like this;
What something is; it is.
What something is not; it is not.
Something cannot be something it is and something that it is not at the
same time.
The only conclusion I can draw about what is and what is not; must be
based on total observation of all the facts available.
Eph 2:8-9
Rom 3:24
Titus 3:4-5
It is impossible to mix grace and works, for the one cancels the other.
3. EXPLANATION of the nation’s rejection.
Vs. 7-10
3a. Paul EXPLAINS that most were blinded.
They did not obtain.
We could say they did not obtain what they tried to work for.
James 2:10
A few were blessed apart from works
Vs. 7 but the elect have obtained it,
Many were blinded
Here Paul quotes Isaiah 29:10
Back in chapter 9:17 Paul mentions how God hardened Pharaoh’s
heart. This was the result of his resisting the truth.
In the same way their hearts were hardened or blinded because they
resisted the truth.
Paul explains that they have been judicially hardened because they persist in the
pattern of works, thinking they can make themselves righteous.
Why did God bring this judgment?
Isa 29:10-13
3b. Paul’s EXPLANATION includes the problem of their religious experience.
Romans 11:9–10 are cited from Psalm 69:22–23.
This psalm is one of the most important of the messianic psalms and is referred to
several times in the New Testament.
Ps 69:20-28
Their very religious practices and observances became substitutes for the real
experience of salvation.
Why did this blindness come to the nation?
Reason #1 It was a heart condition. They were hypocrites.
Their hearts were far from the Lord.
Reason #2 They rejected the Messiah who died on the cross for their sins.
And did this judgment come?
Yes, it was in 70 AD
Sad to say, this same mistake is made today when people depend on religious rituals
and practices instead of trusting in the Christ.
Heb 3:13-15
Can our hearts become hardened through sin?
Yes!
Matt 13:13-15
Some of the Pharisees could not understand what Jesus was saying because
they had not appropriated the truth of God they had already received.
