PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

Romans 11:11-32
“There Is a Temporary Rejection”
1. The RESULTS of the nation rejecting the Messiah
Vs.11- 12
1) The RESULTS included the gospel coming to the Gentiles.
When this rejection happened three tragedies occurred in Israel:
 the nation stumbled (Rom. 11:11),
 their fall and their failure (Rom. 11:12
 and was cast away (Rom. 11:15).
None of these words suggests a final judgment on Israel.
Isa 11:11-12, Isa 60:1-3
2) The RESULTS should include provoking Israel to jealousy.
Paul stated that the Gentiles had a vital ministry to Israel.
2. There will be REJOICING in Israel’s acceptance.
Vs. 13-16
Paul now addresses the Gentiles for the 1st time.
1) Part of the REJOICING or JOY of Paul’s ministry is that he may have an impact on
Israel.
Gal 2:2, Gal 2:6-9
He is motivated in his ministry in that it may cause some Jews to be jealous and
be saved.
2) There will be REJOICING in the future even though Israel has been temporally cast
away.
If the Jews have been temporarily cast away think how great their acceptance will
be in the future.

Zech 12:10, Zech 13:1
Has that happened yet?
NO, it is yet future.
Today, Israel is fallen spiritually, but when Christ returns, the nation will rise again.
3) Paul supports the idea of this future REJOICING with two illustrations.
Paul compares Israel to a lump of dough and the root and branches of an olive
tree. The essential ingredients of the bread are referred to as the firstfruits.
If the essential ingredients are good then when the bread is made it will be good
as well. Numbers 15:17–21.
The olive tree (vv. 16b-24).
Hos 14:4-6
Here the root of the tree is Abraham Isaac and Jacob.
To them was given the promises and the covenant.
3. Gentiles should REMEMBER their Jewish ROOTS.
Vs. 17-24
1) Gentiles should REMEMBER that they are the wild olive branches.
Many of the Jewish people did not believe.
Paul pictured them as branches broken off the tree.
But he saw an amazing thing taking place: other branches were grafted into the
tree to share in the life of the tree.
2) Gentiles should REMEMBER that Israel like the natural branch of a olive tree has been
broken off.
Israel was broken off that the Gentiles could be grafted in.
They were broken off because of unbelief.
The Gentiles now stand because of faith.
3) Gentiles should REMEMBER God’s goodness and severity.
4) Gentiles should REMEMBER that Israel will be grafted in again.
Following the illustration Paul says,
If Gentiles, the wild olive branch can be grafted in how much easier
would it be for God to graft in the
it be for the natural olive branch.
1 Tim 4:1, 2 Tim 3:1-6, 2 Thess 2:1-3
HOW HAVE THE GENTILES DONE IN REGARDS TO PAUL’S WARNINGS?
The 1st warning was against pride.
Vs. 18
The church has used theology derived from this chapter to justify persecuting
the Jewish people. Luke 18:31-33
The 2nd warning was against presumption
Psalm 19:13

We should not presume because of the root.
There should be no presumption because of this reason.
Vs. 19-20
The reason the branches have been broken off according to verse 20 is
because of unbelief.
We should not presume that there will always be an opportunity to be saved.
Vs. 21
We should not presume because of God’s ability to restore is prophetic.
Vs. 23 Jeremiah 23:3-8

We should not presume because the restoration will be accomplished.
Vs. 24
It will be easier than saving Gentiles.
And one might say if it’s more difficult for a Gentile to get saved and it’s a supernatural
event; then why aren’t more Jews saved? That is the subject of the rest of the
chapter that we will look at next time.
