PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

Romans 2:1-16
“THE VALIDITY OF
GOD’S JUDGMENT”
Vs. 1-4
1) GOD JUDGMENT WILL BE VALID BECAUSE ALL MEN JUDGE OTHER MEN.
In Paul’s day it was the religious person who primarily did all the judging of others.
Matthew 7:1-5
John 5:21-23
We are unable to make a final judgment because we don’t always have all the facts
or information.
So, in verse 1 we are told not to judge.
In verse 15 we are told to watch for false prophets.
We are to judge them by their fruit.

Matt 7:15-16
So, we are not to judge the motives of others but we can be fruit inspectors.
Paul says that the religious moralizers stand condemned.
Why?
It is because they practice the same things as unbelieving pagans.
2 Sam 12:5-7
2) GOD JUDGMENT WILL BE VALID BECAUSE IT IS BASED ON TRUTH.
In condemning the Gentiles for their sins, the Jews were really condemning themselves.
3) GOD JUDGMENT WILL BE VALID BECAUSE HE HAS SHOWN HIS GOODNESS.
Instead of giving the Jews special treatment from God, the blessings they received from
Him gave them greater responsibility to obey Him and glorify Him.
Vs. 5-11
4) GOD JUDGMENT WILL BE VALID BECAUSE IT IS BASED ON EACH MAN’S DEEDS.
Paul was not teaching salvation by character or good deeds.
He was explaining another basic principle of God’s judgment: God judges
according to deeds, just as He judges according to truth.
True saving faith results in obedience and godly living, even though there may be
occasional falls.
5) GOD JUDGMENT WILL BE VALID BECAUSE THERE IS NO PARTIALITY WITH GOD.
It is absolutely clear that God is perfectly impartial in his judgment.
Paul explained that the Jewish Law only made the guilt of Israel that much greater!
The Gentiles had
“the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness” (Rom.
2:15).
The basis of God’s judgment of us will be our works.
This does not mean some will be saved by works.
RATHER, BELIEVERS WILL GIVE AN ACCOUNT OF THEIR WORKS, AND NONBELIEVERS
WILL BE JUDGED ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS.
Vs. 12-16
6) GOD JUDGMENT WILL BE VALID APART FROM KNOWING THE LAW.
The Gentiles who sinned without the law will be judged.
The Jews who sinned according to the Law will be judged.
Gentiles without the law know instinctively the basic laws of God and it shows when they
obey them.
So what does this passage say to the Christian?
God knows everything and that one day we will stand before him to give account of our
lives.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled”
(Matthew 5:6).
What does it say to the nonbeliever?
Their sins are yet upon them, and God will judge them with perfect judgment.
John 8:24, John 1:12
