Romans 9:25-33
“God’s Plan Seen in Prophecy”
1. Prophecy is applied to SHOW that it was God’s plan to save Gentiles.
Vs. 25-26
1a. Prophecy is applied to SHOW that Gentiles would be called his people.
John 1:10-12
John tells us that Jesus came unto his own who knew him not.
Who are God’s people?
It is those who receive Jesus the Messiah.
Here Paul quotes the prophet Hosea
In chapter 1 we are introduced to the three children of Hosea and his prostitute
wife. Hosea 1:2-11
God is saying that the 10 northern tribes of Israel will no longer be his people.
The context is that this kingdom is facing destruction from the Assyrians and this
happens in 722 BC.
Later Hosea prophesies that there will be a restoration.
Then the people will be called Ammi.
They will once again be called his people. Hos 2:19-20
In Hosea’s prophecy he is representing the Lord
and his prostitute wife is representing the people.
Here in this passage we see the Lord promising three times to be engaged or
betroth to the people.
And in that day and in the example of Hosea; there was a remnant.
In Paul’s day there was a remnant of believers.
We will learn about the future remnant in chapter 11.
2. Prophecy indicated that only a SMALL number of Jews would be saved.
Vs. 27-29
2a. Prophecy indicated that only a SMALL number, called the Remnant would be saved.
He then quoted Isaiah 10:22–23 to show that only a remnant of Israel would be
saved, while the greater part of the nation would suffer judgment.
Isa 11:11-12
A remnant was saved at that time is Paul’s point and therefore there will be a
remnant that will be saved in the future as well.
Zech 13:8-9
2b. This SMALL number will be saved according to God’s word.
Vs. 28
This verse in its entirety word by word is not found in the Old Testament.
What Paul has done is take portions of what Isaiah said in a few different places.
Isa 10:22-23
2c. This SMALL number will be saved by the Lord himself.
The final quotation from Isaiah 1:9 emphasized the grace of God in sparing the
believing remnant.
Genesis 19:24-25
All of the inhabitants were destroyed.
But there was a remnant that was saved and it was Lot and his three daughters.
2 Peter 2:6-9
The nation of Israel rejected His will, but this did not defeat His purposes.
3. Israel STUMBLED because they did not seek a righteousness that is by faith.
Vs. 30-33
Paul asks, “What then shall we say?” That is, what are we to conclude? The answer is: It is all
by faith.
3a. Gentiles received a SALVATION they were not pursuing.
Paul moved next from divine sovereignty to human responsibility.
3b. Israel was not SAVED even though they pursued it.
Paul made his point very clear from the beginning; we are saved by faith alone.
Rom 1:16-17, James 2:10
God’s plan became the stumbling stone
The stone is a person and whoever believes on him will not be put to shame
1 Cor 1:22-24
3c. Israel STUMBLED over the rock of offense.
Israel was warned that they might stumble.
Paul’s final quotation was from Isaiah 28:16.
It referred to Christ, God’s Stone of salvation
It is also referred to in Psalm 118:22
Five things about the stone
The stone was established by God
The stone was eliminated by religious leaders 1 Peter 2:6-10
The stone is exalted by God
The stone is explained to be a person
The stone exist as a kingdom forever Daniel 2:42
One writer said,
God does not save people on the basis of birth or behavior.
He saves them “by grace, through faith” (Eph. 2:8–9).
