Daniel 9:1-27 “The Seventy Weeks of Daniel” I. Specific Statements Concerning Israel’s Future There are 7 of them in vs. 24
1. There is a decree given by God. First he says that "Seventy 'sevens' are decreed." First we note that God decrees these things. The concern is over the sins of the people of Israel.
The term 'sevens' used here is the word 'shabua', which means a week of years. Therefore seventy sevens is 490 years.
2. There will be a rebellion in the future. The transgression refers to the rebellion. It is singular and refers to a specific event. Zech 12:10-13:1
Rom 11:25-27
3. There will be a time of judgment. To put an end of sin indicates judgments. We also note that sin is plural, it should be sins. Zech 13:8-9, Ezek 20:32-38
4. There will be an offering for sin. Paul says that this atonement came through Jesus Christ. 2 Cor 5:19-20, Isa 59:20 Jesus made direct reference to this idea of his sacrifice being the atonement or offering for Israel. Isa 61:1-3
5. There will be a time of everlasting righteousness. We still wait a time of "everlasting righteousness". This will take place as soon as the Tribulation Period ends.
Jer 23:5-6
6. There will be an end to direct revelation from God. "To seal up vision and prophecy” To seal up means, to end direct revelation. Should we be looking any new revelations from God? Rev 22:18-19
7. There will be a future temple in Jerusalem. “and to anoint the most holy " Literally it says to anoint the Holy of Holies. The last 9 chapters of Ezekiel describe this temple.Ezek 43:12 II. Specific Dates Concerning Israel’s Future Vs. 25-27
1. There will be a command to restore and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Verse 25 gives us further information about this time. The key term here is “with streets and a trench” Ezra 6:13-15
2. There are two specific time periods given. Daniel has already mentioned the total of 490 years and now he says that it will be divided into 2 specific time periods.
The 69 sevens are 483 years. Based on the Babylonian calendar that Daniel would have used this comes out to 173,880 days. The other time period given is 7 years also based on a 360-day calendar. It is then divided into 2, 3 ½ year periods.
3. There are specific events that will take place during these time periods. The details of this prophecy continue in verse 26. Dan 9:26 Did the Messiah come on this date? What should this study mean to you?
1. It should give us confidence in the word of God when we see its accuracy. 2 Pet 1:19-21
2. It should help us see the heart of God. Jesus rode into the city wept over the people who were rejecting him. 3. It should help us realize that the offer of salvation is limited. There were 490 years that were decreed by God and then judgment will come.
