PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

Genesis 11:1-9
“The Tower of Babel”
Rev 17:5
1. The REIGN of Nimrod
Chapter 10:8-12
1a. Nimrod is described as mighty.
He was a mighty tyrant in the sight of God, the first dictator.
1b. Nimrod builds his kingdom.
He was the founder of the Babylonian empire and the organizer of the enterprise
that led to the construction of the tower of Babel.
2. The city and the tower of the REBELLION
Vs. 1-4
2a. The REBELLION occurred during a time of unity.
One language, one speech
2b. Those in the REBELLION traveled together.
This was deliberate rebellion against God’s Word. They journeyed “from the east” which
suggests that they were turning their backs on the light.
The mention that they moved “from the east” indicates trouble because in Genesis
“east” or “from the east” suggests movement away from God.
2c. Those in the REBELLION built more than a city and a tower.
1) The PLACE of Babel
Most writers upon the subject, following the tradition handed down by the Jews
and Arabs, have identified it with the great Temple of Nebo in the city of Borsippa,
now called the Birs-Nimroud (explained as a corruption of Birj Nimroud, "Tower of
Nimrod").
2) The PRACTICE of their religion
It includes the worship of the mother, the queen of heaven, and her son, Tammuz.
The Babylonian religion moves to a city in Asia Minor; the city of Pergamum.
Revelation 2:13
These priests then take their religion across the Aegean Sea to Italy and
settle in Rome, which becomes their headquarters.
3) Their PURPOSES were to
(1) maintain unity in opposition to God
(2) make a name for themselves.
The intent behind building “a tower with its top in the heavens” was to join or
displace God.
3. The RESPONSE of God to mankind
Vs. 5-9
3a. The RESPONSE is seen when God came down.
The tower’s top was in the sky where God supposedly dwelt.

Isa 40:22-23
3b. The RESPONSE was tied directly to the unity of the people.
They would throw off God and attempt to rule the universe.
And in their delusion they would never turn to God.
Their Babylonian hearts would become impenetrable and irredeemable.
2 Peter 3:9
3c. The RESPONSE included a solution.
Let us confuse their language
This was really an act of mercy as well as judgment, for had they persisted in their
plan, a more terrible judgment would have followed.
Genesis links the fate of Sodom with that of Babylon (cf. 10:10–19; 11:7; 18:21).
Isaiah wrote:

Isa 13:9

Isa 13:19-20
Then, and today, the message is the same:
We must leave Babel with its proud dreams and God-defying ways if there is to be
any hope.
