PASTOR TIM's NOTES:
Genesis 11:10-32
“The Hope of the Messiah”
1. The primary CONCERN was the promise of the Messiah
Vs. 10-26
1a.The CONCERN involved the genealogy of Shem because of the promise.
Shem’s genealogy stands as a bridge of hope to a new era.
1b.The CONCERN involved the genealogy of Shem which must not be seen as complete.
There are people who are left out of the genealogy.
This is done for the purpose of keeping the group of 10.
It is called Mathematical agreement.
We see it in Matt 1:17 as well.
Why is this such an issue?
It is because of James Ussher born 4 January 1581 – 21 March 1656.
In his work, he calculated the date of the Creation to have been nightfall preceding
23 October 4004 BC.
If we hold to Usher’s view then there are problems when we compare the
genealogies.
1) Let’s look first at Luke’s genealogy in chapter 3. Luke 3:35-36
Here we see that the name Cainan was not found in Genesis 11.
Is this a mistake?
NO! It just shows us that Genesis 11 is not a strict genealogy.
2) If the genealogy is strict then Noah lived until 2 years before Abraham was born.
Shem would be a contemporary of Abraham for 150 years.
Listen to what Joshua says about the forefathers of Abraham.
Josh 24:2, Josh 24:14
If we have a strict genealogy in chapter 11 then Joshua is saying that Noah and
Shem served other gods.
3) When Abraham is in the land and fighting the kings who stole Lot and his family,
where did these kingdom’s come from?
4) When Abraham goes down to Egypt (chapter 12) in a time of drought how did
the Egyptian kingdom become so established in just 5 generations?
5) In chapter 20 we meet Abimelech where did this line of kings come from so
quickly.
All of this could not have developed in 427 years.
2. The genealogy CONCLUDES with Terah and Abram.
Though Abram, like Shem, was named first in the list over his three brothers, he, like
Shem, was not the firstborn. Abram was named first because of his prominence.
3. The CONDITION of Abraham’s family in Ur
Vs. 27-32
3a. The CONDITION of Abraham’s family included very close family relations.
“Haran fathered Lot,” the nephew who would give Abram so much problems in
future years.
Nahor married Milcah, his niece, the orphaned daughter of his departed brother
Haran.
And we learn two things about Abram’s wife Sarai—
The omission of any information about her being a daughter of Terah and
thus the half-sister of Abraham
We learn that Sarai was barren—which sets up the huge challenges that
would come to Abraham’s faith.
3b. The CONDITION of Abraham’s family included idolatry.
Abraham’s family were moon worshipers.
They resided in the leading center of lunar religion.
The city was dominated by a massive, three-staged ziggurat built by Ur-Nammu
during the beginning of the second millennium B.C.
Josh 24:2
3c. The CONDITION of Abraham’s family move.
The Old Testament and the New Testament state that the call of God was to
Abraham while in Ur.
Gen 15:7, Neh 9:7, Acts 7:2-4
On the obedience chart we could see that Abraham was batting one out of three.
He left Ur
He did not leave his family
He did not go to the land God would show him.
4. The CIRCUMSTANCES of the faith of Abraham
Hebrews defines faith like this:
Heb 11:1-
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Heb
11:8-10
Abraham immediately “obeyed” and “went,” says the writer of Hebrews.
What we are going to see is that Abraham was able to get an eternal perspective on life.
In verse 13 the writer says of all those, including Abraham,
Heb 11:13-14
It has been said, “outlook determines outcome.”
Abraham recognized that he was simply passing through.
Though his world was filled with Babylonian hearts, Abram would live for something besides
building a tower and making a name for himself.
