Genesis 12:1-9
“The Journey of Abraham”
1. The CALL of Abraham
Vs.1
1a. The CALL was to leave Ur of the Chaldeans.
“The Treasure of the Royal Tomb of Ur”
The city was excavated by Sir Leonard Wooley from 1922 to 1934.

God called Abraham out of idolatry (Josh. 24:2),
John 15:16, Matthew 10:37, Mark 8:35
1b. The CALL was to leave his past behind.
Leave all that is familiar to you.
Why did God call him?
1) His love
2) His desire to bless the whole world.
3) His example of Abraham walking by faith.
Gen 15:6, Rom. 4:1–5; Gal. 3:6–14, James 2:23
2. The COVENANT made with Abraham
Vs. 2-3
There are the Personal blessings.
God promises that Abram would become a great nation.
God promised to make Abram’s “name great.”
2) There are Global blessings.
There is more than the law of retribution at work in God’s curse-for-curse,
blessing-for-blessing promise.
Gal 3:8-9
The Covenant is based on 3 things.
It is based on God’s faithfulness to forgive.
It is based on God’s faithfulness to his word.
It is based on God’s desire to bless the world.
3. The COMPROMISE of Abraham
How was Abraham’s obedience to the call?
It was partial.
4. The CONTINUED journey of Abraham
Vs. 4-9
4a. Abraham now CONTNUES his journey and there are others with him.
“the people that they had acquired in Haran
The phrase can be translated “the souls that they had won in Haran,”
4b. Abraham’s CONTINUED journey would be marked by altars and tents.
The tent marked him as a “stranger and pilgrim” who did not belong to this world
(Heb. 11:9–16; 1 Peter 2:11),
The altar marked him as a citizen of heaven who worshiped the true and living
God.
4c. Abraham’s CONTINUED journey would be marked by a clear vision.
Heb 11:9-10
Col 3:1-4
4d. Abraham’s CONTINUED journey would be marked by a clear promise.
It was the promise of the land
4e. Abraham’s CONTINUED journey included calling on the name of the LORD.
Notice the two places he dwells between.
Bethel means “House of God”.
Ai means “The ruin or destruction”
All along God had been moving him from east to west, from destruction to the
house of God.
Have you responded to the call of God?
Do you dwell in a tent and realize you are just passing through this life?
Have you left altars in your life? Proclaim the name of the Lord!
Do others know you are a worshipper of the one True God?
