PASTOR TIM's NOTES:
Genesis 1:3-13
“The Earth in the Beginning”
1. The six views of the six days of Creation
1) the twenty-four-hour solar day view (creation took place in 144 hours);
2) the punctuated activity view (the twenty-four-hour days of creation activity were
separated by indefinite periods);
3) the gap view (there is a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 2, wherein a primeval rebellion
took place, and the creation week is a remaking of the earth after the rebellion);
4) the day-age view (which understands the days as corresponding to geological ages);
5) the framework view (the days are a literary structuring device to convey the truth of
creation, and not consecutive days); and
6) the analogical day view (the days are God’s workdays).
Certainly these six views cannot all be correct.
In fact, only one can be right.
2. The analysis of the text of Creation
2a. Arrangement of the text
A quick read reveals that the six days of creation are perfectly divided.
The first three days describe the forming of the earth and
The last three its filling.
2b. Correspondence in the text
There is also a remarkable correspondence between the first three days and the
last three.
2c. Numerical value of the text
The words “God” (Elohim), “heavens” (samayim), and “earth” (eretz),
which are the three nouns of the opening verse, “In the beginning, God
created the heavens and the earth,”
They are repeated in this creation account in multiples of seven.
“God” occurs thirty-five times (5 x 7),
“heavens” twenty-one times (3 x 7), and
“earth” twenty-one times.
2d. The historical style of the text
The whole account is written in the normal Hebrew narrative tense.5
3. The Reasons for believing the Days of Creation
(That they are Twenty-Four Hour Days)
There are 5 of them that I have taken from The Rise and Fall of Civilization
David Hocking pg 34 now reprinted as “The Beginning”
5 Joseph Pipa, Jr. and David Hall, eds., Did God Create in Six Days?, chapter 6, C. John Collins, “Reading Genesis 1:1–2:3 as an
Act of Communication: Discourse Analysis and Literal Interpretation” (Taylors, SC: Southern Presbyterian Press/Oak Ridge, TN:
Covenant Foundation, 1999), pp. 131, 132.
1) The normal usage of the word day.
The Hebrew word ‘yom and the plural yomim’ occur over 1900 times in the Bible. Only 65
times do they refer to a period other than a 24 hour day.
2) The use of the numerical adjective
When a numerical ajective is used with the word ‘yom or yomim’ it always refers
to a 24 hour period. This occurs 700 times.
3) The phrase “evening and morning”
Dan 8:14
4) The relationship of the days of creation to the six day work week.
Ex 20:8-11
5) The relationship of the Sabbath day.
Gen 2:2-3
4. The Forming of the World in Creation
4a. Day one in Creation
Vs. 3-4
Notice the repetition of the phrase “Then God said”
It occurs in vs. 3,9,11,14,20,24,26 and 29
4b. Day two in Creation
Vs. 6-8
Notice that “heavens” is plural.
Paul makes an interesting statement about the plurality of heaven. 2 Cor 12:2-3
4c. Day three in Creation
Vs. 9-13
Ps 104:5-13
5. Seeing Christ in Creation
5a. Christ is the light.
The Bible begins and ends by describing a world that is filled with light but no sun.
God is the source of light. John 8:12
Jesus called himself the light, saying “I am the light of the world.” Rev 21:23-24
5b. Christ the Creator.
Jesus the light was present when creation was spoken into existence.
John 1:1-5, Col 1:16-17
5c. Christ brings order.
Christ the light and Christ the Creator is the one who brings order out of the dark
chaos of our lives.
