PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

“The First Marriage”
Genesis 2:18-25
1. God will PROVIDE a helper for Adam.
Vs. 18
1a. God will PROVIDE a helper because it is not good for man to be alone.
We see here a contrast of what the creator says of his creation.
There is also a contrast between the wisdom of the world and what God says about man.
God says that it is not good for man to be alone.
1b. God will PROVIDE a helper that is comparable.
"helper" strong's # 5826 `azar (aw-zar');
Part opposite; specifically a counterpart,or mate
This is the name used to describe God as the helper of Israel
(cf. Exodus 18:4; Deuteronomy 33:7; 1 Samuel 7:12).
2. God will PRESENT the need for a comparable helper.
Vs. 19-20
2a. God will PRESENT the need by having Adam name the creatures.
This speaks of the intelligence of Adam.
Notice the contrasting word, but, in verse 20.
Adam had seen the animals and had noted that they had companions.
3. God demonstrates PURPOSE in the creation of the woman.
Vs. 21-23
3a. There is a PURPOSE in having the woman come from his side.
The way in which woman is made tells us much of the intention
God had for their relationship.
She was made of the same stuff as the man
—the same bone, the same flesh, the same DNA.
3b. There is a PURPOSE in the relationship as a picture of Christ and the church.

Eph 5:25-33
The church is the bride of Christ:
How did we come into existence?
We could say that from his side pierced on the cross; out flowed the Church.
4. God reveals foundational PRINCIPLES for marriage.
Vs. 24-25
1. to leave.....forsake all other relationships
The custom of Moses called for the wife to join the family of her husband.
So Moses’ declaration,
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother” must be understood
relatively and as a prescription for the loyalty and intimacy that a man must give
his wife—he must “leave” his family.
2. to cleave or joined or united.........Permanence
The word joined means to be glued together.
To cleave or be joined indicates that marriage is to be viewed as a covenant.14
Matt 19:4-6
3.To become one
" and they shall become one flesh "
a. In terms of the sexual relationship Heb 13:4
All sin affects our emotional and spiritual relationships to God, but sexual sin will affect
us in a deeper way.

1 Cor 6:16-20
b.the term “one flesh” indicates something unique about the marriage relationship.

Gen 29:14

1 Chron 11:1-2

Acts 2:17
The word "flesh" here in the Greek is a similar thought.
When God makes us one , or one people, in the context of marriage he
brings a unity that is not possible by another means.
The oneness that God desires us to have in marriage is much more than
physical.
It is spiritual as well.
4. To be transparent
This also implies much more than the physical.
The word naked here means "transparency" having nothing to hide, openness and
honesty.

14 Wenham, Genesis 1–15, p. 71.
