Genesis 32:1-32
“The Blessing of Being Crippled”
1. Jacob PREPARES to meet Esau
Vs. 1-8
1a. His PREPARATION began when he was met by Angels.
And when Jacob saw them he said,
‘This is God’s camp!’
So he called the name of that place Mahanaim [“two camps”]” (32:1, 2).
Ps 34:5
1b. His PREPARATION began with sending word to Esau of his arrival.
1c. His PREPARATION became fearful when news of an army arrives.
Jacob’s fear and distress were eminently reasonable.
The last he had heard from Esau was that Esau was biding his time to kill him (cf.
27:41).
2. Jacob PRAYS before meeting Esau
Vs. 9-12
2a. Jacob PRAYS in humility.
2b. Jacob PRAYS remembering God’s promises.
Prov 3:5-6
3. Jacob sends a PROCESSION ahead of him.
Vs. 13-21
3a. Jacob sends a PROCESSION of animals.
3b. Jacob sends a PROCESSION with definite instruction.
Gen 25:23
4. Jacob does not PREVAIL and is blessed by God.
Vs. 22-32
4a. Jacob is hoping to PREVAIL against an unknown assailant.
Jacob would say
"For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved”
Now Jacob did not see God face to face or else he would have died.
But he did wrestle with God- as God condescended to take on the appearance of a
man.
John 14:9
2 Cor 4:5-6
4b. Jacob does not PREVAIL until he is crippled.
4c. Jacob does not PREVAIL and so he receives a blessing and
a new name.
The Prophet Hosea speaks of this event. Hos 12:1-6
Here Jacob’s struggle with God is applied to God’s people.
What’s the message to God’s people today?
We should get alone and struggle with God until we come to the end of ourselves;
cry out to God in submission and surrender.
Then we can ask God to bless us.
