Genesis 35:1-29
“Jacob Returns to
Walk with the LORD”
Col 2:6-7, Amos 3:3
1. The Lord is once again DIRECTING the life of Jacob.
Vs. 1-8
1a. Jacob is obedient to God’s DIRECTION.
Gen 28:20-22
1b. Jacob’s new DIRECTION includes leading his family in repentance.
His family had been DEFILED in two ways
1) defilement through contact with the corpses of the dead
2) religious contamination by the taking and possession of the Shechemites’ gold
and silver-plated idols.
Eph 4:22-24
1c. Jacob followed the DIRECTION of the Lord and fear falls upon the cities around them.
1d. Jacob followed the DIRECTION of the Lord and built an altar.
Now he calls it El Bethel
God of the House of God
1e. God’s DIRECTION included the loss of Rebekah’s nurse.
She is remembered by the name it was called Allon Bachuth.*
or the Oak of
Weeping
2. The Lord once again DECLARES the Covenant promises to Jacob.
Vs. 9-15
2a. The DECLARATION confirms the Covenant.
The event is parallel to what had happened to his grandfather Abraham when he was given
the covenant of circumcision (cf. chapter 17).
The parallels are four.
1) In both cases the name-giving symbolized the transformation of the patriarch’s
character and destiny.
2) The first use in the Bible of God’s name El Shaddai (“God Almighty”) was
employed in confirming the promise to Abram (cf. 17:1).
3) El Shaddai blessed Jacob in terms similar to those used to bless Abraham in
respect to fruitfulness, a nation, kings, and the land:
4) The theophany ended as “God went up from him,” as he had done with Abraham
(v. 13; cf. 17:22).
2b. Jacob responds to these DECLARATIONS.
3. The Lord allows the DEATH of Rachel to picture a future hope.
Vs. 16-20
3a. The Death of Rachel occurred during child birth.
Rachel was dying, and she knew it.
Her midwife’s attempt at consolation, affirming another son, brought little comfort.
3b. The Death of Rachel occurred near Bethlehem.
The place
Vs. 21 The tower of Eder or Migdal Eder
or the Watch tower of the flock Gen 30:24
Now this incident is mentioned by two different prophets.
1) Jeremiah speaks of this incident and uses it to bring HOPE to God’s people.
Jer 31:15-17
2) Now Micah 4:8-9
Why should there not be crying or weeping there?
It is because the king will come
Now to Micah 5- often quoted at Christmas Mic 5:2-5
Even in Rachel’s death there is pictured in the birth of this son a story of great
HOPE.
The names of the PLACE
Ephrath- fruitful
the fruitfulness of God will bless the whole world through Jesus.
Bethlehem- the house of Bread
Jesus would be the Bread of Life
Migdal Eder- the tower of the flock
the location from where the king would come
the king who would be the sacrificial lamb
The names given at the place of birth
Rachel says to name him Ben Oni
Son of my sorrow
Jacob says no he will be Ben ja min
Son of my right hand
Isa 53:3, Heb 1:3
4. The DIVISION of Jacob’s sons speaks of their continual problems.
Vs. 21-26
4a. The DIVISION continues with Rueben’s incest.
So Reuben seduced her to ensure that she could not rival Leah’s position.
1 Chron 5:1, Gen 49:3-4
4b. The DIVISION is seen in the way the sons are listed.
5. The DAYS of Isaac are ended at 180 years.
Vs. 27-29
Why is Isaac’s burial mentioned here?
It is a testimony that Jacob is walking with God.
Jacob’s life calls us to repent of our sin and obey God’s call and to WALK WITH HIM. How can
two walk together unless they agree?
