PASTOR TIM's NOTES:
Genesis 36:1-43
“The Family of Esau”
1. Esau’s choice of wives would compound his broken RELATIONSHIPS.
Vs. 1-5
1a. The broken RELATIONSHIPS began when he married Canaanites women.
Gen 26:34-35
Esau’s marital decisions had the tragic effect of cutting off his descendants from
the chosen people.
We see the same thing later with King Solomon
1 Kings 11:4
1b. The broken RELATIONSHIPS lead to the PROPHESY concerning the future of Esau and
Jacob.
We find this in the anti-blessing that Jacob gives Esau
Gen 27:39-40
2 Sam 8:14, 2 Kings 8:20-22
2. Esau’s family would not REMAIN in the Land.
Vs. 6-8
1) Esau’s family is now associated with the PLACE; Edom
Notice vs. 8, Esau is Edom.
Also vs.1 and 19
Esau’s departure was equally significant for Jacob, because it recognized Jacob’s
right to the promised land.
Gen 25:29-32
The name Edom is constant reference to the people who
did not care for the things of God.
The writer of Hebrews commends Moses for just the
opposite. Heb 11:24-26
2) Esau family will live in the PLACE known as Mount Seir
This is present day Jordan.
Northern Jordan would be the home of the Moabites.
Southern Jordan would be the home of the Edomites.
3) Esau’s family will live in an area mentioned in PROPHECY
4) The Problems with Jacob and Esau will become part of
God’s plan for the future.
It was God’s plan that they separate.
Acts 15:37-40
It was God’s plan to send Esau to Mount Seir.
Deut 2:4-6
God will sometimes use the problem people in our lives for his purposes.
Deut 2:12, Josh 24:4
3. Esau’s family would REFUSE to help the children of God.
Vs. 9-14
3a. There are two incidents when they REFUSED to help the
children of Israel.
We are introduced in vs. 12. to Amalek.
From him comes the Amalekites.
They refused to allow the children of Israel to pass
through this area when they were coming out of Egypt.
Ex 17:8-16
Again what’s the issue with the Amalekites?
Deut 25:17-18
You see from 550 B.C. to 400 B.C. the Edomites were overrun by Nabatean Arabs
who ransacked their territory.
There is another famous Amalekite in the Bible.
He was defeated by a Jewish woman named Esther.
Est 3:1
The Edomites blocked the crossroads, cutting off the route of the fugitive
Israelites, and delivered them back to the Babylonians (cf. Obadiah 14).
Jer 49:7-8
It was an Edomite king, Herod the Great, who exterminated the babies of
Bethlehem in his attempt to kill the King of kings (cf. Matthew 2).
4. Esau’s family RECEIVED God’s judgment because they would not repent.
Obad 17-18
Do not sell what God has given you through his Word, your church, and your family for a cheap
pleasure.
That’s what Esau and his family did.
