Genesis 37:1-36 - “Joseph Begins His Journey to Egypt”
Gen 15:13-15, Gen 45:7-8
1. Joseph’s family situation is DETERIORATING
Vs. 1-4
It is deteriorating because of 2 factors.
1a. His family situation is DETERIORATING because of
the bad report he would bring to his father.
Num 13:32-33
1b. His family situation had been DETERIORATING because of
Jacob’s favoritism.
Favoritism had become a generational sin in Jacob’s family.
What made things worse?
“Also he made him a tunic of many colors.” (v. 3b).
2. The DREAMS of Joseph fuel his brother’s hatred.
Vs. 5-11
2a. The REVELTATION of the first dream portrayed Joseph ruling over his brothers.
Joseph was so full of the dream that he was compelled to pour it out to his
brothers.
2b. The RESPONE to the dream revealed hatred toward Joseph.
There is no way of knowing what response Joseph expected from his brothers, but
there was truly only one possible response:
The refrain, “so they hated him”
2c. The REVELATION of the 2nd dream involved the entire family.
All dreams in the Joseph narrative come in pairs, because the pairing of dreams
meant certainty of fulfillment. Gen 41:32
2d. The RESULTS of the 2nd dream revealed their envy of
Joseph.
Jacob rebuked Joseph, but he did not hate him as did his sons.
3. The brothers will DETERMINE to sell Joseph into slavery.
Vs. 12-28
3a. Jacob is DETERMINED to send Joseph off to find his brothers.
There are differently some reasons for concern;
Joseph’s brothers were 50 miles north, or approximately five days’ journey away.
Even with the concerns notice Joseph’s response.
Vs. 13 Come, I will send you to them."
So he said to him, "Here I am."
3b. Some of the brothers are DETERMINED to kill Joseph.
Joseph was alone in their hands.
Notice why they wanted to kill him; they say
this dreamer is coming
3c. Rueben was DETERMINED to intervene on Joseph’s behalf.
Rueben has him thrown into the pit with the intention of returning and setting him
free.
3d. It was 9 of the brothers who were DETERMINED to kill him.
The verbs of verses 23, 24 describe a brutal assault.
“They stripped him” is a term used to describe the skinning of animals (cf.
Leviticus 1:6).
3c. It is Judah who was DETERMINED to sell Joseph.
Judah believes that selling him is better than killing him.
4. Joseph’s future will not be DISCLOSED to his father.
Vs. 29-35
4a. Reuben RETURNS to find Joseph gone.
As the oldest of the brothers, Rueben would be responsible with the care of
Joseph.
4b. The brothers will REPORT Joseph’s death to his father.
4c. Jacob will REFUSE to be comforted.
Jacob insisted that he would publicly mourn for Joseph to his dying day.
5. Joseph has been DELIVERED to Potiphar right on schedule.
Vs. 36
Israel’s human savior was in place.
God had planned it all.
The awesome God of the Bible and of all history was at work
