PASTOR TIM's NOTES:
“Israel Goes to Egypt”
Genesis 46:1-34
Ex 13:19-22
1. Jacob’s journey begins with several PROMISES.
Vs. 1-7
1a. The PROMISES come after Jacob worshipped.
“I will go and see him before I die” (45:28).
Jacob was apparently living in Hebron, near his family tomb,
1b. The PROMISES are given at Beersheba.
Beersheba was especially rich in patriarchal history and devotion.
Abraham had made a covenant with Abimelech, named the place Beersheba,
planted a tree, and called on the name of the Lord (cf. 21:23, 24, 31–34).
Isaac worshipped the Lord, built an altar,
(cf. 26:3, 24, 28).
Jacob himself knew Beersheba well because it had been his home in the early
days before he journeyed to Haran (cf. 28:10).
1c. The PROMISES include 4 statements.
Israel would not become a great nation in the land of promise but on the pagan
Nile!
God will go with them.
“I myself will go down with you to Egypt.” Gen 28:15
God will bring them back into the Land. Gen 15:13-14
Jacob will see Joseph again.
Jacob would journey to Egypt in FAITH and not in FEAR.
2. Jacob’s journey will include all of his POSTERITY.
Vs. 8-27
2a. The POSTERITY of his family is listed according to the mothers.
The POSTERITY that came from Leah is listed. vs. 8-15
The POSTERITY that came from Zilpah is listed. vs. 16-18
The POSTERITY that came from Rachel is listed. vs. 19-22
The POSTERITY that came from Bilhah is listed Vs. 23-25
The POSTERITY born to Joseph in Egypt is listed.
The POSTERITY will total 70 persons.
The list has definite symmetries.
Both Leah and Rachel bear twice as many descendants as their maids.
Leah has thirty-three, and her maid Zilpah has sixteen.
Rachel has fourteen, and her maid Bilhah has seven.
Why is the number of descendents an issue?
Deut 10:21-22
The Greek translation of that text says 75.
The Dead Sea Scrolls of the Deut text say 75.
In Acts 7:14 Stephen says that there were 75.
So how do we reconcile the two numbers?
One of the ways to reconcile is to note again that the word daughters, plural and
granddaughters, plural are mentioned in verse 5 to 7.
The other way to cross reference it with another passage
1 Chronicles 7:14
Here we find out that the sons of Manasseh had five grandsons.
3. Jacob’s journey ends as Joseph PRESENTS himself to his father.
Vs. 28-34
3a. Joseph will PRESENT himself to his father at Goshen.
Notice it is Judah that is selected to go and meet with Joseph.
Remember it was Judah that made the appeal to Joseph to spare his brother
Benjamin.
The language suggests that Joseph arrived in style.
This must've been quite a scene.
“fell on his [father’s] neck and wept on his neck a good while” (v. 29c).
We find similar words with Simeon in the Christmas story.
Luke 2:29
29 "Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,
Here Jacob beheld his son, his temporal savior, and said he could now die. Later
Simeon would behold the Son, his eternal Savior, and knew he would die in peace.
3b. Joseph will PRESENT himself to his brothers as they prepared to meet Pharaoh.
Joseph’s emphasis to Pharaoh regarding his family is that they are shepherds.
Joseph was also instructing his brothers to tell the truth.
As shepherd they were afforded both separation and prosperity.
And when the 430 years of Israel’s sojourn were completed, and the cup of the
Amorites was made full, Joseph’s coffin was brought forth first as the exodus
began.
And the glorious presence of God accompanied them.
