PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

Genesis 50:1-26
The Faith of Jacob and Joseph
1. Joseph’s mourning PROCESS begins.
Vs. 1-6
1a. The PROCESS begins emotionally.
“Then Joseph fell on his father's face and wept over him, and kissed him.” (v. 1).
Seventeen years earlier, when Joseph was reunited with his father, we read that he
fell on his father’s neck (cf. 46:29).
1b. The PROCESS begins with his father being embalmed.
Jacob’s mummification was purely utilitarian
2. Joseph received the necessary PERMISSION to bury his father.
Vs. 7-14
2a. The PERMISSION allowed a great host of people to attend
the burial.
The procession was made up of three groups.
 The elders of the land of Egypt
 Jacob’s family
 The military
Vs. 11 we noticed that the Canaanites had quite a response.
Abel-Mizraim—“mourning of Egypt
2b. The PERMISSION allowed the sons of Jacob to obey the PROMISE to their father.
With the formal Egyptian part of the mourning completed, the family proceeded to
Hebron and Machpelah for the interment.
3. Joseph’s brothers will PLEA for mercy.
Vs. 15-21
3a. Joseph’s brothers will PLEA for mercy now that their father
is dead.
Now we see the reaction of his brothers.
They are filled with anxiety.
They will make an appeal for forgiveness.
This plea for forgiveness was twisted—because it was introduced with a lie.
Eph 4:30-32
3b. Joseph will answer their PLEA by referencing the Sovereignty of God.
Joseph had no desire to play God.
Vs. 19 "Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God?
Joseph had discerned God’s good providence in their evil.
But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to
bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.
In chapter 45 we had the Big Reveal of Joseph to his brothers.
His brothers were shocked and then greatly afraid.
How did Joseph bring comfort to them then?
5 But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because
you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.
The prophet Jeremiah voiced this same truth to encourage his people when they
were about to go into captivity in evil Babylon:
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for
wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah
29:11).
Rom 8:28
Rom 8:31-32
4. Joseph will request a final PROMISE.
Vs. 22-26
4a. The request for a final PROMISE will come at the end of 110 years.
Joseph lives long enough to see his great-grandchildren.
4b. The request for a final PROMISE is made in faith.
Joseph’s last words sparkled with faith, as the writer of Hebrews
comments: Heb 11:22
The Faith of Jacob and Joseph are great examples to us for very different reasons. But what we
can says is that both of these men were able to look beyond their present circumstances and trust
God.
