PASTOR TIM's NOTES:

Genesis 5:1-32
"The Genealogy of Adam"
1. The POTENTIAL of mankind made in God’s image.
Vs.1-2
1a. The POTENTIAL to have a relationship with God
Those in the line of Seth are reminded they were image-bearers, they had unparalleled
privilege and potential.
From our study in chapter 1 we learned;
 As image-bearers we have the capacity to hear God’s word.
 As image-bearers we were charged to rule the earth in God’s stead (cf. 1:26,
28).
 The image of God in us suggested the possibility of an intimate spiritual
relationship as children of God.
1b. The POTENTIAL included things we are not to do.
We are not to murder Gen 9:6
We are not to lie Col 3:9-11
We are to not curse to speak evil of others James 3:8-10
1c. The POTENTIAL includes procreation.
The genealogy in Genesis 5 demonstrates that they did so, because it suggests
extraordinary multiplication. Ps 127:3-5
2. The PENALTY of sin that brought death
Vs.3-32
2a. The PENALTY includes a formula
1) The name
2) The age at the birth of first son
3) The length of remaining life
4) The age at death
2b. The PENALTY includes death
"And then he died"

Rom 5:12-13, Rom 5:15-16
Jesus came to end the penalty of death.
John 5:24-25
Now through, one man, Jesus Christ that sin can be taken away.
2c. The PENALTY included Hope.
There was hope given in the names and their length of life.
Methuselah lived 600 years after Noah was born.
Lamech lived 595 years after Noah was born.
Noah was 600 years old when the Flood came. His sons were 100 years old.
Therefore: Lamech would have died 5 years before the flood.
Methuselah would have died and then the flood came.
3. The PURPOSE of mankind is seen in Enoch.
Vs.21-24
The placement of Enoch’s name could not be more intentionally dramatic.
Evil Lamech, the man who worshiped his sword, was number seven in the Cainite
genealogy, while here, Enoch, the man who “walked with God,” is number seven
in the Sethite genealogy.
3a. The PURPOSE is seen in Enoch walking with God.
1) His walking with God seems to begin at the birth of his son.
2) His walking with God must be distinguished from other Old Testament saints.
Heb 11:5-6
Enoch’s life is characterized by 3 things mentioned by the writer of Hebrews.
 A desire to please God
 The faith to believe God
 The determination to seek God
Walking with God implies 2 things
 Agreement Amos 3:3
 Surrender
3b. The PURPOSE is seen in Enoch’s rapture.
This is the same language used of Elijah
Paul says that the same may happen to us as well. 1 Thess 4:16-18

Here we see Enoch as a prophet. Jude 14-15
He warns his generation of the Coming judgment of God.
In this case it would be the flood.
Instead of following the course of the rest of humanity Enoch walked with God.
Job 19:25–27
3c. The PURPOSE is seen in Enoch naming his son.
Enoch walked with God and so named his son Methuselah.
"his death shall bring"
And his death brought the flood.
Methuselah named his son "Lamech" ......"the despairing"
Having heard his grandfather preach; he knew that judgment was coming.
And Lamech names his son "Noah"..........."rest and comfort"
