PASTOR TIM's NOTES:
Genesis 6:1-8
"Judgment in the Days of Noah"
1. The DEPRAVITY of mankind on the earth.
Vs. 1-4
1a. The DEPRAVITY was seen in mankind as they multiplied.
1b. The DEPRAVITY was seen in the sons of God and their pursuit of wives.
The term “took wives” can mean to take by force.
Notice the phrase, “of all whom they chose”.
1b. The DEPRAVITY was seen in the giants in the land.
The Hebrew word would be Nephilim.
These Nephilim or giants were the children of the sons of God and the women
taken by force. Num 13:33
These fallen ones were the heroes (the mighty men) of old, “men of renown”—and
men of violence. Gen 10:8-9
2. The DEMONIC control on the earth.
2a. The DEMONIC control on the earth is seen in sons of God.
"Who are the sons of God?"
This is probably the most controversial passages in Genesis.
There are three basic opinions
"sons of God" is a reference to the "Godly line of Seth."
"sons of God" is a reference to the rulers in the line of Cain.
“sons of God” are fallen angels who co-habitate with women.
3 reasons for this view
1) This interpretation of Genesis 6 is the oldest view.
2) This interpretation of Genesis 6 correctly interprets the phrase" the sons of
God" used exclusively in the Old Testament for angels.
Job 1:6
3) There are New Testament passages that see these sons of God as fallen angels
as well.
In the New Testament Peter makes reference to this occasion.
1 Peter 3:19, 20 alludes to Christ preaching upon his death
2 Peter 2:4, 5, 9 , Jude 6-7, Luke 20:34-36
2b. The DEMONIC control on the earth is seen in the warning of God.
The warning was that “My Spirit shall not strive* with man forever”.
Some would say that it is the spirit of man being referenced.
God gives us his spirit when he gives us life. We see this usage in Gen 2:7
Or God is referring to his own Spirit.
That would be the natural reading of the text. He says that it is “my Spirit”.
John 16:8
2) The warning also includes a reference to 120 years.
Is God saying that man's lifespan would be limited to 120 years?
This would be roughly a sevenfold reduction of the average life span of the
antediluvians.
Or is he saying that it would be 120 years before the flood would come?
Heb 11:7, 1 Peter 3:20
3. The DETAILS of the coming judgment of the earth.
Vs. 5-7
3a. The DETAILS of the coming judgment include the extent of man’s wickedness.
The portrait that Moses gives of pre-flood culture is that of a thoroughly demonized
civilization.
3b. The DETAILS of the coming judgment include the reaction of God himself.
Their depravity was not a temporary state. There were no relentings, no
repentances, no hesitations.
Why was God grieved?
It is because mankind is his handiwork and he is grieved at what they had become.
It is because his judgment is just and right and yet he would desire them to turn or
repent from their evil ways. Ezek 18:23, Ezek 18:32
1 Sam 15:29
3c. The DETAILS of the coming judgment include the extent of the judgment.
This tells us that it was a universal flood that God brought about.
4. The DIVINE grace that came to Noah.
Vs. 8
How did Noah find grace with God?
This is the first occurrence of the word grace in the Bible.
It is worth noting that we find it in the midst of man's incredible sin.
Ps 23:3
Grace gives us what we do not deserve and it is given by God apart from human effort.
How do we find grace. Eph 2:8-10
Matt 24:37-39
Our only hope is the marvelous grace of God.
