PASTOR TIM's NOTES:
Genesis 6:9-7:24 - “The Great Flood” or - “The Salvation of Noah”
1. The CIRCUMSTANCES that caused Noah’s selection.
Vs.9-13
1a. The CIRCUMSTANCES included his relationship with God.
Vs. 9 Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations.
This is not the idea of perfection but it is the idea of maturity or completeness.
Heb 11:7
Like Abram after him, who “believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as
righteousness” (Genesis 15:6), Noah believed.
This becomes important as it shows us that the biblical doctrine of imputed
righteousness began before the flood.
Romans 1:17; 3:21, 22; 5:17, 19; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 3:9; Titus 3:5;
Hebrews 11:7; 2 Peter 1:1
1b. The CIRCUMSTANCES includes the corruption on the earth.
The Nephilim, violent warriors, were the “men of renown” (v. 4).
The corruption and violence speak of a society that no longer has a sacred view of
human life.
2. The COMMAND to build the Ark
Vs.14-16
2a. The COMMAND includes specifics about the ark.
Here Noah is challenged to have faith on unprecedented scale.
There are 3 things about the command that are important.
1) The ark was of incredible size, especially in its ancient setting.
The dimensions of the ark are given.
450 long, 75 feet wide 45 feet high- With 3 decks 95,700 square feet, 1,396,000
cubic feet and a gross tonnage of 13,960- it Is one and one-half football fields in
lenght
2) The ark was to be covered on the inside and out.
Vs. 14 cover it inside and outside with pitch -Lev 17:11
3) The ark had a specific design
Its design was such that the more weight on board the more stable it would
become. Apparently windows were created 18 inches from the top for light
and ventilation.
3. The COVENANT is established
Vs.17-22
3a. The COVENANT would guarantee their safety.
3b. The COVENANT required Noah’s obedience.
Noah’s obedience is mentioned several times. Gen 7:5,9,16
Noah’s obedience was in the midst of extreme circumstances.
Noah’s obedience would require God’s enabling.
Noah was to bring on the ark pairs of every kind of unclean animal and 7 of
the clean animals.
This would require "supernatural intervention".
4. The COMPLETION of the ark was timely.
Chapter 7: 1-16
4a. The Ark was COMPLETED and it was time to enter.
4b. Noah COMPLETES the ark and escapes the coming judgment.
How did Noah condemn the world?
How did Noah keep going during these years building the ark?
He would have been encouraged by the previous generations.
4c. Noah COMPLETES the ark but it is God who shuts the door. Eph 4:30
5. God was CONTROLLING the environment.
Vs.17-24
5a. Under God’s CONTROL Noah was lifted to safety.
The judgment of God that swept down upon mankind was the thing that lifted Noah
to safety.
5b. Under God’s CONTROL the entire earth was judged.
The Scriptures are very clear that this was a worldwide flood.
This is the sense of 6:7, 12, 13; 7:4, 19, 21–23; 8:21; 9:11, 19 and of the New
Testament—2 Peter 3:5-7
The writers of the Old and New Testaments understood the flood was Universal.
The rabbinical writers understood that the flood was Universal.
Noah found grace.........Why? It is because he placed his faith in God’s word.
