This was the dream. Now we will tell the king its interpretation. You, O king, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory, and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all—you are the head of gold. Another kingdom inferior to you shall arise after you, and yet a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth. And there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, because iron breaks to pieces and shatters all things. And like iron that crushes, it shall break and crush all these. And as you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom, but some of the firmness of iron shall be in it, just as you saw iron mixed with the soft clay. And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly brittle. As you saw the iron mixed with soft clay, so they will mix with one another in marriage,but they will not hold together, just as iron does not mix with clay. And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever, just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure. — Daniel 2:36-45

This is an incredible dream, revelation, and interpretation that God delivered to Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar. It makes known thousands of years of future events. No wonder the king was terrified by it. He was given a glimpse far into the future. And get this, Nebuchadnezzar was not a God-fearing man. I think it's laughable because we have a lot of supposed God-fearing men out there today who claim to know biblical events in the future. And yet, God gave it first to someone who did not know or fear him. God does stuff like this so we will know his power.

And I am going, to be honest with you, I think this dream still terrifies us. As we discussed last time, there are things about this prophecy we understand today only because history has revealed them. And yet there are small pieces of this prophecy that we still do not understand. For example, we know who these first four world empires were, but there is a lot of debate about the divided kingdom represented in the toes and feet. Yet as unsettling as this is, we can be certain that all world empires will one day end, and God will establish another kingdom. A holy empire.

And this is just like our God. He gives us just enough detail that we'll know what's happening when it's happening but not so much that it exonerates us from trusting him by faith. For example, did you know there are about 20-25 books in our world today that claim to be some form of divine scripture? About 20-25 books claim to have some form of divine spiritual revelation by a spiritual leader. Yet, in all of these books, subtract one (the Holy Bible). There is one thing missing. Do you know what that is? Detailed prophecy. Prophecies that serve up enough compound probability that it would be only possible to be known and disclosed by the one true God. And right here in Daniel 2, that's what we have. Thousands of years of prophecy detailed enough that only God could accurately predict them. And God consistently proves that only he knows the end game, and the visionaries, prophets, and philosophers of their day, and ours, are no match for the God of all Gods.

Gentlemen, God knows the times in which we live. He knows the leaders of this world are losing their minds. But guess what, he's got it all figured out. We must be faithful as he reveals the next portion of the prophecy in our time. And one day, he's going to hurl a giant rock at the empires of this world. And then he will establish a new empire under a Holy and Righteous King.

ASK THIS: Have you lost all hope in the things of this world?

DO THIS: Have faith in God and be faithful till the end.

PRAY THIS: God, rescue us from this world.

PLAY THIS: Rescue.
