The invitation to rejoice that runs through Psalm 97 reaches its peak in the angel's greeting to the Blessed Virgin announcing the conception and birth of Jesus (cf. Luke 1:28) -- words similar to those that the prophet Zephaniah addresses to Jerusalem, the daughter of Zion (cf. Zephaniah 3:14-15). Mary stands for the faithful and righteous people who are gladdened by the coming of the Kingdom of God. The Church uses this psalm on the feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, which recalls the vision of the future kingdom seen by the apostles on Mount Tabor.
This psalm arrangement is used in the Mass liturgy for the 7th Sunday of Easter, Year C.
