“My Generation” is a 1965 song by “The Who” that glorified the rebellious anger of the Baby Boomers as they came out of their teens in an age when old conventions and morals were being tossed aside for new ways of thinking and living.
Let’s look at all the wonderful things my generation brought: family breakdown, societal confusion and dissolution, moral collapse, sexually transmitted diseases, aids, etc. As one born at the tail end of that generation I don’t “dig” what they were saying.
In fairness, before we completely condemn my generation, let’s make a few observations. First they weren't growing up in a perfect world. For all its good points America had plenty of flaws. It was not then, is not, now and never will be a “Christian” nation. So please don't believe or say that it was or is. Understand this: the 40’s and 50’s were filled with sin and hypocrisy. There were plenty of “religious” men who abused their wives with impunity because society accepted it. Many intelligent, capable, women who had worked in important jobs to survive WWII had to go back to lesser roles and be treated like second class people. Black folk were treated with contempt and suffered great indignity at the hands of “respectable” white folk.
Nor were they the first rebellious generation. After Joshua’s death a “new generation” came along and rebelled against God, setting a pattern that has continued throughout history (Judges 2:10-13).
Christians must refuse to conform to any generation, choosing instead God’s regeneration into the image of Jesus (Rom 12:1-2). Which will it be for you – a rebellious generation or an obedient regeneration?
