REVELATION 22.6-11 “The Time is Near”
-New universe / New Jerusalem
-The River of Life and the Tree of Life
-Return to Paradise
Angel, John, & Jesus (Rev 22.6-11)
Verse 6) -Beginning of epilogue / Echoes prologue (Rev 1)
-God sent angel to show John the future / Revealed new creation
-Assures John. All will happen / Not just new creation but all of Revelation
-Hope. Faithful and true / Certain and sure (Dan 2.45)
-God cannot lie (Titus 1.2, Heb 6.18)
-God guarantees words spoken by prophets
-“Lord God of the holy prophets”
-Same eternal God speaks
-Prophets moved by Holy Spirit (2 Pet 1.21) / Angels (Messengers) sent
-God’s will and the future revealed to servants (Believers)
-Test of true prophet / Fulfillment of prophecy (Deut 18.20-22)
-Much has been fulfilled / End is to come
-“Must shortly take place”. Both book and time nearing conclusion
-Revelation events (Tribulation and return of Jesus) could happen anytime
-No person/angel knows the hour (Matt 24.36; Mark 13.32; Luke 12.40)
-Returns like thief in the night (1 Thess 5.2,2 Pet 3.10)
-*Pre-Tribulation. Rapture before Tribulation / Sudden and unexpected
-Jesus says watch for signs to be ready (Matt 24.42-44)
-*Post-Tribulation. Return at end of Tribulation / Surprise to lost (1 Thess 5.4)
-Revelation prepares believers (Rev 16.15)
-Last days began when Jesus ascended (Acts 1.9-11) / Be ready!
-Christians should not live in worry but expectation for His return (Matt 24.45-46)
-Why has Jesus not returned over 1,900 years after Revelation?
-God’s timing is not our timing / 1,000 years are 1 day (2 Pet 3.8)
-God is longsuffering / Not wishing that any would perish (2 Pet 3.9)
-God’s ways are not our ways (Isa 55.8-9)
Verse 7) -Voice of One who is faithful and true. Jesus
-“Behold, I am coming quickly!”
-Sixth blessing to those who keep the words of prophecy
(Rev 1.3, 13" class="scriptRef">14.13, 16.15, 19.9, 20.6, 22.7, 13)
-How to keep the words?
-Believe Revelation
-Trust God and obey Him
-Be ready for Jesus’ return
-Treat book as faithful and true. Live accordingly
-What Revelation contains. Prophecy of future
Verse 8) -John resumes roles as speaker
-Testifies. Writing what God reveals
-Eyewitness account / Next best thing to seeing
-Testimony of New Testament
(Luke 1.2; John 1.14; 1 Cor 15.3-8; 2 Pet 1.16)
-John is overwhelmed with all he saw and heard
-For a second time / Falls down to worship an angel (Rev 19.10)
-Messenger is not God / Not worthy of worship
-Great danger in misplaced worship of leaders/messengers
-If so easy for mature and godly Apostle to misdirect worship…
-The tendency to err. Major practical emphasis in Revelation
-Misdirected worship
-Apostates in church letters
-Command to come out of Babylon
Verse 9) -Angel rebukes John. “Do not do that!”
-Fellow servant. Follows the words of this book / Obedient to God
-Like prophets and all true believers
-Command. Worship God (Only God is worthy)
-First commandment. No other gods before Him (Ex 20.3)
-Sum of Law. Love God first (Matt 22.37-38)
-Angels do not deserve worship
-Problem for Jehovah’s Witnesses / Claim. Jesus is Michael the Archangel
-Thomas worshiped Jesus as Lord and God (John 20.28-29)
-Jesus did not rebuke him (Matt 4.10)
Verse 10) -“Do not seal the words…”
-People need to know / True then and now
-Remains open for urgency of the hour
-In contrast, Daniel told to seal his book (Dan 12.4)
-Last days not then / Message not for Daniel’s time
-At hand. Imminent / Return of Jesus is the next big event
-Final revelation of Jesus. His plan for the end
-No need for another message / Canon is closed
-Jesus did not come to the Indians (Mormons)
-Jesus has fulfilled all other Old Testament prophecies
Verse 11) -Whatever state you are found at His return remains
-Will be judged as innocent or guilty
-Will remain holy or sinful forever
-Those who reject Christ / Reject Him for eternity
-Next week. Jesus testifies to the churches
*Description with challenging, disputed, or unclear interpretation.
