In order for grace to increase, do we need to continue in sin? Some might have tried to pervert Paul’s words to suggest this (cf. 5:20). Paul answered, “God forbid” (6:2). God’s grace is there for us regardless of what we do. We can do nothing to make God love us more, and we can do nothing to make God love us less. It is always there, and it is consistent, but we must not abuse His grace.
Truly, we live in a society where we do not talk much about sin. We want to hear feel-good sermons, not sermons about sin. Being dead to our sins does not mean that we will not continue to struggle with temptation, but it does mean that we do not have to be controlled by our sin. We have “newness of life” (Rom 6:4) through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Bible, Expositor and Illuminator Union Gospel Press, Spring Quarter 2021).
