Seek Wisdom's Way (Proverbs 1:1-19)
How am I trying to attain wisdom?
1) Guide to Wisdom (1:1-6)
a. The Book of Proverbs fulfils an important purpose; it sets forth God's wisdom for His people.
b. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. ~ Proverbs 4:7
c. Defn: proverb -- "a comparison" or "an ethical teaching" (Hebrew)
d. Purpose of Proverbs -- four aspects.
2) Key to Knowledge (1:7)
a. The Book of Proverbs is wisdom that comes by living in right relationship with our Maker and Redeemer through faith in Jesus Christ and by submitting daily to His lordship in every area of life. The "fear of the LORD":
i. God is the perfectly holy and loving Father-figure each of as longs to have in our lives.
ii. Our joy in His presence and our awareness of His authority form a healthy reverence for Him in our lives.
iii. This awe, or reverent fear, grows as we know Him better, love Him more, and give ourselves to Him more completely.
iv. Being wise must start with surrendering to God, or it doesn't start at all.
b. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. ~ Psalms 14:1
3) Admonition to Learn (1:8-9)
a. We are to pay close attention to parental guidance.
4) Warning against Folly (1:10-19)
a. (vs. 11) Notice the strategy: "Come with us,..."
b. (vs. 19) Notice the motive: dishonest profit.
