But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. — Acts 9:6-9

Once in a while in our life, we will encounter a moment similar to this. A moment we are confronted by some catastrophic physical event that will change our spiritual perspective forever. And these moments are memorable because the audible and visual experiences are undeniably divine. They will, without a doubt, rattle us to the core. And as a result, we listen more attentively, reason more thoughtfully, and sense more empathetically.

But it's especially ironic that Jesus temporarily removes Saul's sight to get him to see from a different perspective. Mostly because Saul was blinded by his biases so much that he could not see the truth. And once he does see the Truth himself (Jesus) on the road to Damascus, he is now blinded physically. This is literally a laughable moment. It makes me wonder if the Holy Trinity had a discussion in heaven about how funny this would be.

But let's be honest, most of the time, when these events happen to us, they are not funny. They are anything but funny. They are awful, life-altering, painful, shocking, and deeply emotional — but never funny. And thus, when we live in the midst of these moments, we often have to let someone else lead and take us by the hand and guide us while we spend time in reflection, processing the divine nature of what's just happened that's changed us forever.
