Dr. Jordan Rogers continues preaching through the Book of 1 Thessalonians in this sermon from 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 entitled, "Spiritual Demands for the Christian Life."
The work of the Spirit of God and the Word of God are imminently critical within us and among us. A Church family among whom the Spirit is quenched has less life than a graveyard, and a Christian who quenches the Spirit of God works against his own soul and that of his or her brethren, not to mention the souls of the unregenerate who, without the work of the Spirit, will remain dead in their trespasses and sins.
The Christian who despises Christian preaching also works against his or her own soul, denying the very gifts of the grace of God, given for their fortification and spiritual strengthening. Such a Christian is self-defeating, forgoing the spiritual nourishment provided by God through the gift of preaching, resulting in spiritual malnutrition and weakness and opening the door for all manner of attack from the Devil.
The Christian who indiscriminately swallows down preaching without testing its soundness, eats and drinks spiritual poison, weakening the spiritual state of the soul to the point that there is no truth-saturated immunity by which to fight off infection of a thousand different heresies. Me must be discerning in the way we receive the preaching of the Word of God.
