The Thessalonians had been wavering in their faith. They’d been listening to false teachings about Christ having returned, and had allowed doubts to creep in and move them. So Paul calls them to return to the firm foundation – to stand upon the gospel teachings they had both heard and read from Paul; to 'stand firm'.
