It matters that you think, and what you think about. God has given us the Bible to direct our thinking.

2 Peter 2:17 "These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them"

How to be a false teacher #1. Smile. #2 Talk about the Bible but do not teach it. #3. Make people feel good about themselves. SPRINGS WITHOUT WATER

Jeremiah 2:13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."

John 4:13-14 "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up into eternal life."

Failure to teach the Bible scares the hell out of me… literally… “Blackest darkness is reserved for them.” wont tolerate leading his people astray.

2 Peter 2:18 "For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error."

2 errors of sinful human mind (THINKING) “I’m fine” “I can do it”

Stuart Smally: “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it people like me!”

2 anchors of the gospel (THINKING) LAW → you are a sinner; GRACE → Jesus saves sinners

Those “enticing” undermine one or both of these

2 Peter 2:19-20 "They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity- for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning."

John Calvin: “When the difference between good and evil is removed, everything becomes lawful; and men loosed from all subjection to laws, obey their own lusts.”

False argument: Because of Jesus there is no longer law.

“Will we do what we want in heaven?”

(19) “Mastered” he/te/tai (gk) → “To be defeated.” There is no defeat where there is still fight. Don’t give up. New nature in heaven is already won.

2 Peter 2:21-22 "It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and “A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.” "

Christians are never going to sin again? Back to their vomit or the mud?

Explain this verse using the whole gospel message.

2 Peter 3:1-2 "Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given my our Lord and Savior through your apostles."

Natural fallen thinking “I’m fine” “I can do it” → stimulate us to “wholesome thinking” Gospel thinking.

2nd letter “re”mind us of the prophets and apostles

You are a sinner, you cannot do it. Jesus came to save sinners. He already did it.

Trying to “feel” right with God is exhausting, like a well w/o water.

Bible moves us into a new way of thinking. From trying get the feeling of being right with God to having the deep soul knowledge that we ARE right with God, because of Jesus Christ.
