Lesson Title: The Plagues Continued
Passage: Exodus 9:1-35
Lesson outline: See below.
I. THE PLAGUE OF MURRAIN (Exodus 9:1-7)
A. Foundational Information
1. Murrain is an infectious disease of livestock causing widespread death.
2. The word murrain comes from the Latin word mori which means to die and is also the base for words like mortal and mortician.
3. The fifth plague was the first plague in which living creatures died; five is often used as a number representing death in the Bible.
B. The Warning Given (Exodus 9:1-5)
1. The announcement of the coming plague (Exodus 9:1-3)
2. The separation between the cattle (Exodus 9:4; Exodus 8:22-23)
3. Set for an appointed time (Exodus 9:5; cp. Exodus 8:9-10)
C. The Plague Initiated (Exodus 9:6-7)
1. Accomplished as God had said (Exodus 9:6)
2. Pharaoh sent to know of the condition of Israel’s cattle (Exodus 9:7a).
3. Pharaoh’s heart was hardened (Exodus 9:7b). Pharaoh, a type of the Devil, showed no regret for the suffering through which he put his people.
D. The Plague Interrupted
1. The plague was obviously stayed because Egypt still had cattle.
2. However, this was the first plague that could not be entirely undone.
II. THE PLAGUE OF BOILS (Exodus 9:8-12)
A. Foundational Information
1. The sixth plague (boils) caused the worst physical pain on man of all the plagues. The number six is strongly associated with man in the Bible. (See Background Resources under Sunday School H.E.L.P.S. for more information on the number six in scripture.)
2. The boil broke forth with “blains” which was a welling of the skin; large ulcerous sores (Deuteronomy 28:27—referred to as the botch of Egypt).
3. The plague was related to dust (Exodus 9:9); man comes from dust and will return to dust again (Genesis 3:19).
B. The Plague Initiated (Exodus 9:8-11)
1. No warning was given.
2. Moses sprinkled ashes toward heaven in the sight of Pharaoh (Exodus 9:8, 10).
3. Boils broke forth with blains upon man and beast (Exodus 9:9-10).
4. The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils (Exodus 9:11).
C. The Plagued Interrupted (Exodus 9:12)
1. Once again, there is no mention of any interaction between Moses and Pharaoh to stay the plague, but the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart seems indicative of such communications.
2. If Pharaoh refused to believe God’s word, he would refuse to believe the miracles.
III. THE PLAGUE OF HAIL (Exodus 9:13-35)
A. Foundational Information
1. The number seven is often associated with a perfect work; God’s work is often sevenfold. (See Background Resources under Sunday School H.E.L.P.S. for more information on the number seven in scripture.)
2. Although the work was not finished with this plague, the last four plagues were grouped together as a final rush of God’s judgment—“For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart” (Exodus 9:14).
3. The problem was with man’s heart! The plagues attacked their bodies, property, and possessions, but God used that to get to their hearts. The plague of their hearts (hard hearts) was the ultimate cause of the plagues. David asked God to examine him, prove him, and try his reigns and his heart (Psalm 26:2).
B. The Warning Given (Exodus 9:13-21)
1. The warning was to be given in the morning (Exodus 9:13).
2. The warning included news of additional plagues (Exodus 9:14).
3. The warning of God’s power (Exodus 9:15-16)
4. The announcement of the next plague (Exodus 9:17-18)
5. The warning from the word of God (Exodus 9:19-21)
C. The Plague Initiated (Exodus 9:22-26)
1. The rod of Moses was stretched forth (Exodus 9:22-23).
2. The fierceness of the plague explained (Exodus 9:23-25)
a. God sent thunder and hail, and fire ran along the ground (Exodus 9:23-24).
b. The hail smote all that was in the field (Exodus 9:25; Psalm 78:43-51).
3. The separation of the land of Goshen (Exodus 9:26)
D. The Plague Interrupted (Exodus 9:27-35)
1. Pharaoh’s intellectual confession (Exodus 9:27-28)
2. Moses’ reply—a reprieve from current judgment (Exodus 9:29-33)
3. Pharaoh’s words proved to be shallow and empty (Exodus 9:34-35).
