The Laws of Justice and Mercy. The ancient Hebrew Law was a guide for the Hebrew people for living together in a community with one another. The Law served as the basis for all matters that related to social and economic justice within the Hebrew community. They were forbidden by law from defrauding and cheating one another. They could not charge high-interest rates. The Law spelled out how they were to practice their religious rituals and faith. The Law was never intended to provide a complete list of every possible human sin—for the heart is far too wicked for any one book to cover all of the wickedness it can conceive or design (see Jeremiah 17:9). Rather, God gave the Law to direct His people toward faithful obedience to God. The Law served as the foundation for holiness.
