“The Certainty of Our Hope”
Hebrews 6:9-20
1. The ______________ of better things.
Vs. 9-12
1) The CONFIDENCE of their salvation.
Vs. 9
The author begins by tenderly expressing confidence in their faith, calling them ““beloved”)—or dear friends
We argued last time that the stern language in vs. 4-6 was hypothetical.
And now the language changes.
Vs. 9 But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you
What are those things?
Vs. 9b things that accompany salvation
2) The CONFIDENCE seen in their lifestyle.
Vs.10
Notice he says that God is not unjust.
God knows every encouraging word you have spoken this week.
Mark 9:41
The essence of their past lifestyle is noted in his saying, “as you have helped his people,” a direct reference to their initial heroics.
Heb 10:32-34
Matt 25:37-40
1 Cor 15:58
3) The CONFIDENCE necessary to imitate those who inherit the promises.
Vs. 11
There is the warning of being sluggish.
The word behind “sluggish” is an unusual term that means “lazy” and was used earlier in 5:11 to describe those who were “slow to learn”—literally, “sluggish in the ears
There is the encourage to be diligent.
Vs. 11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence
Paul uses the same word when exhorting Timothy.
2 Tim 2:15-16
1 Cor 15:10
Spiritual diligence is a sign that God’s grace is really at work in us!
2. The ______________ of God’s promises.
Vs. 13-18
1) God CONFIRMED His promise to Abraham.
Vs. 13
God’s main promise to Abraham is recorded several times in scripture.
Abram being seventy-five when he left Haran (12:4), they were still childless. That promise is given again in Genesis 13:14-17
In chapter 15 we continue to see Abraham’s faith in the promise.
Along with imitating the faith of Abraham, we are also to imitate his “patience”—or more accurately, his long-suffering.
2) This CONFIRMATION is seen in an unchangeable oath.
Vs. 17
God not only gave Abraham a promise, but He also confirmed that promise with an oath. We call on the greater to witness for the lesser.
None is greater than God, so He swore by Himself!
3) This CONFIRMATION should end all dispute or conflict.
Vs. 16b
The confirmation should end disputes. And some of those disputes and conflicts lie within each of us.
4) This CONFIRMATION should cause us to flee to God as our refuge.
Vs. 18b
So, our assurance of salvation is guaranteed by God’s promise and God’s oath. Notice the phrase “fled for refuge” (Heb. 6:18) suggests the Old Testament “cities of refuge” described in Numbers 35:9ff and Joshua 20.
3. The _________________ of our Hope.
Vs. 19-20
1) The CERTAINTY is seen in Jesus as our anchor.
Vs. 19
Our hope in Christ is like an anchor for the soul.
Our anchor is “sure”—it cannot break—and “steadfast”—it cannot slip.
No earthly anchor can give that kind of security!
2) The CERTAINTY is seen in Jesus as our forerunner.
Vs. 20
The writer then clinches the argument: this Saviour is our “forerunner” who has gone ahead to heaven so that we may one day follow! (Heb. 6:20)
