In our Bible message today the Apostle Paul tells us that sometimes there can be people in the church that act like wolves among the sheep. He tells the leaders of the church, “be on your guard…watch out for wolves”…
Acts 20:28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. 31 So be on your guard!
4 words should stand out to you in these verses:
• Flock – God’s people, the church
• Shepherds – elders, pastors
• Sheep – disciples, people who love Jesus
• Wolves – bad teachers, false teachers
Sometimes, wolves look like sheep. Someone who doesn’t teach the Bible right, who wants to trick or mislead, hurt or just neglect the sheep IS A BAD TEACHER. Paul says they: “won’t spare the flock; they distort the truth; draw away disciples”
A wolf does not love the sheep. A wolf wants to take sheep away from their loving shepherds.
Pastor Adams and I and our elders, we are what Paul calls us in v.28 “shepherds of the church of God” - Jesus has given us a job = we are to love our sheep, protect them, feed them the truth of God’s Word, care for them in every way and keep spiritual wolves away!
In v.28 - Paul says that Jesus gave his life to save his sheep “he bought them with his own blood” – to save us from our sins and make us a sheep in His flock!
A wolf is someone who teaches you to go against what the Bible says. A wolf says it is okay to sin and do whatever you want. A wolf says that there are many ways to be saved. A wolf wants you to trust what they say and draw you away from loving Jesus who is The ONLY WAY to be saved from our sins. We don’t want wolves in our life or in our church. So, let’s do what Paul says: BE ON OUR GUARD!
