In John chapter 16 Jesus makes a statement that is very hard to believe. He looks at his disciples and says, “It’s better for you that I leave.” Jesus has been their leader for three years and soon they will be leaderless. How could it possibly be better? Because when Jesus leaves He gives them something. What is it? A person whom Jesus describes as a helper. The Greek word is paraklete and it means, “to come alongside and speak truth.” This is what the very best counselors do. Jesus tells his disciples that things are changing, “I won’t be with you but you will have a counselor. I haven’t just given you instruction; I’m giving you a person.”

Everyone needs good counsel. Of course the best counsel comes from those who know and care about you. This is why the Holy Spirit’s counsel is so effective. The Spirit of God knows you better than you know yourself. His counsel is truth. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” This means the goal of the Holy Spirit is to shine the light on Jesus.
